WTB:. Looking for late model Corvair.

I Sold my '63 corvair a few years ago.

Now I'm on the hunt to put another Corvair in my life again!

I'm in the search for a late model (65 and up) Corvair, preferably stick. I'm looking for something that is running ... Some cosmetic defects. My budget is about between 5 to 6k.
Anyone got any leads?

I'm in Philadelphia, PA and willing to travel up to 200 miles.
Right now I'm just looking what's out there. I won't have the funds til Sept/Oct.

:whoa: Are you sure that you want to limit yourself to late-model Corvairs that are within 200 miles of Philadelphia? Corvairs that have "lived" in the region around the Philadelphia area may have suffered a lot of exposure to road salt. Late-model Corvairs are considered to be at a disadvantage in that they are "thin-skinned" (i.e. manufactured with a somewhat thinner gauge of sheet-metal) and are therefore more susceptible to body rot and the kind of damage that comes from being driven in parts of the country that uses a lot of road salt to combat snow and ice. I think that many people who are in search of a "new" Corvair would widen their search area to encompass the entire nation, if it led to finding the "right Corvair" that does not suffer from excessive body decay. I would suggest widening your search to cover all possibilities around the country. If you find what you consider to be the car of your dreams, then figure out how you're going to bring it home. Even if you have to ship it by commercial carrier, the cost of shipping would likely be much less than the cost of trying to repair body decay caused by road salt.

You will have to decide, based on your assessment of your own mechanical skills, how much restoration work you are willing and capable of tackling yourself. Anything that has to be done by a professional body shop or professional mechanic will likely add a great deal of expense to the total cost of your purchase. While spending more money up front does not guarantee that you will get a better car to start out with, the added cost of an initial purchase or of adding the cost of transportation to bring the car from a distant location might ultimately save you money. There is also the possibility of asking Corvair Forum members or members of CORSA to help you to evaluate cars that you would be considering that are too far away for you to personally examine prior to purchase. Many Corvair buyers in Europe for example have taken a similar approach in asking for help and advice from Corvair enthusiasts around the United States as they work through the process of finding and locating candidates that look good from listings on the Internet. Some of these candidates turn out to be a poor choice when they are actually evaluated by a third-party Corvair aficionado. Others turned out to be a great find that ultimately was packed up and shipped all the way to Europe! The key is to find the best car you can for the available money, to utilize assistance from within the Corvair community when making the final decision, and to not cut corners when spending money to buy or transport the vehicle of your dreams to your home. Overestimating your ability to restore a substandard car might be false economy that will haunt you in the end as you struggle to bring the car up to the standards of being a safe and drivable vehicle.

Since the car has lived in New Jersey and has some body damage, you should proceed with caution. There are several CORSA club chapters in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and if you decide to check it out you might consider recruiting some Corvair enthusiasts to help you to evaluate the car. You might also consider having a body shop provide you with an estimate for body repairs and to evaluate the body for any possible decay that could be masked or hidden with the use of plastic body filler. Having a professional body repair shop evaluate the car gives you the advantage of having some experienced eyes look at the car for things that you might not spot. The 95 hp engine is in a slight disadvantage over the more common 110 hp engine, but the lower state of tune can also permit the use of REGULAR gasoline for lower operating costs. A 110 hp or 140 hp Corvair engine may require the use of a higher octane gasoline that will add to your cost of operation.

A quick Internet search reveals that Dr. Kutlu lives at the following address, which is about 80 miles from your location in Philadelphia. He is apparently a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon (but does not do Corvair body work). ::-): His medical practice is in Morristown. NJ.
