Why would you use a lightened flywheel?

A light flywheel would let the engine rev a little quicker, with the clutch pedal depressed, but then the inertia would not be there to help accelerate as the clutch is released.

In drag racing, we usually went to higher flywheel weights so the car would really leap (much higher inertia) when clutch dropped. (used a 40 lb wheel on my 396 big block, at 7200 rpm when clutch dropped with 5:38 gears)

RoadRacing, Auto-X, Hillclimbs. There are also people running them on the street. A Corvair is not a heavy car. Most people who try to drag strip launch a Corvair, only lunch the transaxle.

On my shelf is a trophy from Lyons Drag Strip for class winner for my 1965 Monza. Stock class and only modifications were to remove the hub caps, flip the air cleaner lid over for better flow, and increased the front tire pressures to 30 pounds. Did not drop a transaxle, and had no problems with that at all.
The winning speed was 76 MPH at 18.11 seconds!
Still have the car and drive it weekly.
