Re: Corvair DOT letter from 72
It appears that the Federal government actually did a fair, complete, comprehensive and well documented evaluation of Nader's accusation againt the EM Corvair. Too bad they didn't do it during Corvair production, instead of after the Corvair production had been discontinued.
But even if this supportive letter had been published in the mid-sixties, GM likely wold have killed Corvair production anyway. It was the era of supercars like the Camaro, Mustang, Barracuda, Dodge Charger, etc. Aluminum-engined Corvairs were expensive to manufacture and couldn't compete with the supercars. GM could have further developed the Corvair and established it's own market, but it would have needed more development, like the GM experimental 176 cu. in. experimental Corvair 'cammer' engine shown below.
Instead, Chevrolet dropped the top of the line Corsa and its optional turbocharged engine after 1966. They discontinued all annual model upgrades or redesign work and discontinued advertising of the Corvair. With no effort to market the Corvair, sales naturally declined -- justifying the GM decision to stop production in 1969.

I haven't seen that letter until now - thanks for sharing it
I have posted the entire findings from the court including testimony and even letters to and from Ralph Nader .
Much of it is boring graphs and such but some of it is pretty juicy
It is over 100 pages here --- viewtopic.php?f=81&t=324" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;"
