66 Corsa 140 with factory air conditioning

Unread post by corvairnorm » Thu Oct 19, 2017 6:12 am

A friend has a 66 Corsa coupe with factory installed air conditioning. The car runs and drives, but needs a gas tank and brake work. The body is basically very solid, but does have some rust. The doors and lids all line up well, and open and close properly. The engine has a center mount four barrel, but otherwise, the car seems to be all original and unmolested. The a/c system is complete and closed, but inoperative. The interior is pretty good except for the carpet and headliner. With a bit of work, this car could be a daily driver, but to make it nice, it will need body work and paint, and the previously mentioned items. The car is located in Central Florida. We believe that about 150 of these air conditioned Corsa models were built, and certainly not many of them still exist.

Asking price is $5500, including a gas tank and whatever brake parts will be needed. Everything is negotiable.

I have a 66 Corsa conv 140hp with factory air. Was wondering how many of the 150 Corsas built were convertibles with factory air. Btw , mine is completely restored and won Corvair of the month for April 2015.

There seems to be quite a few of them out there. There are upwards of 30 of them accounted for. They were only made at Willow Run or LA. Rarest would be an LA build coupe. The LA build convertibles would be the rarest.
The number supplied by Dave Newell was 153 produced and this was based on the total RR coded blocks (the a/c Corsa specific block code) that Tonawanda produced. GM did not keep any other specific production records.

He should have a pic of the body tag, VIN and engine code ready for buyers who want to be sure this is really one of those rare models. I've seen quite a few of these that are converted after the fact. I know of two in Arizona that are clones but are presented as being genuine (not Rondo's). It's a shame it was converted to a single, center carb but the old parts can be sourced for a restoration if desired.

The A/C Corsas are a rare Vair. I'll bet there are 50-75 still around of the estimated 150 built. I have two and know where a third un-restored hardtop is sitting. I gave about half that for one about a year ago in similar shape but it was missing the RR engine case.

I can supply pictures of the vin and body tags. I'll get them posted. I am not sure that the engine code is RR. I do have carbs and linkage to return it to stock.

If you have all the parts to return it to stock and the VIN, body tag and case code numbers and dates all agree, that should really help to hold the value.

Again, I will recommend posting pictures of the VIN tag, body tag and engine case code so people can see it is a genuine 66 Corsa with factory A/C.
That might get you some more attention. I see a few things that hint that the engine might not be an RR code and that the A/C might have been added later. After 50+ years you never know.

Thanks for the VIN and tag pics. Info on the body tag confirms a 66 Corsa hardtop with factory air.
The engine code is a big deal to someone going for a full stock resto. The rivets on the VIN tag looking suspect so I would want to see the hidden VIN if I were a potential buyer. Plain rivets were found on early 65 production but as far as I know, both Willow Run and Van Nuys used roset rivet heads after 65.
