1966 Monza 4-Door Savannah GA - Asking $9600 - Make Best Offer

Post by Lane66Monza »

Tail of the Dragon 2 resized.jpg
Selling as is. 4 Door Hardtop, 110 hp, PG. About 73k, December 2024. Mileage may not be accurate. Currently GA registered & titled. Car has visited, Perry, GA (7); Helen, GA (5); Maggie Valley, NC (5); Wilminton, NC; & Biloxi, MS in the past 5 years. Car has many miles driving around the Savannah area. It also made a round trip on TN Hwy 129 Tail of the Dragon.

Work started in March 2018. New tires, wheels, trim rings & center caps. New battery cables & circuit breaker. New front disc & rear drum brake systems w/new rear wheel cylinders, lines & turned drums. Dual ft disc master cylinder & brake low fluid warning system. Rebuilt front & rear suspension, rebuilt 63 steering gearbox, collapsible steering shaft. New axle bearings all around. Rebuilt with new universals & balanced drive shafts.
Tail of the Dragon 1 resized.jpg
Cleaned fuel tank. New fuel delivery system, fuel lines, electric fuel pump, aft mounted filter, prime switch w/2 selections, impact switch & oil pressure switch, relay controlled.

LED exterior/interior bulbs & Halogen headlights. Heater & ducts cleaned & rebuilt, new heater hoses. Hi flow fan motor and relay control of hi speed. Console w/7’ display Bluetooth radio, w/several inputs. 12 volt power outlets & lighted cup holders. Rear seat console light. All instruments & warning lights work. Volt, manifold and oil pressure gauges. Rear carpet replaced. Windsheild washer pump and jug replaced with one (LMC Truck sale for a 94 Chevy truck). "Wiper motor has been received and will be replaced soon."

110 hp engine reworked, polished crankshaft, new main bearings, camshaft, pistons, rings, rod bearings, cylinders, gaskets & seals. Oil pump cleaned, polished cover, gapped pump set. Heads chambers cleaned & 12 new valves w/new Viton seals installed. Valves seats lapped & leaked checked. Carbs rebuilt. Rerouted new engine fuel lines. Engine last compression test shows 170 psi average.

Automatic PG transmission resealed & serviced. New cable sealed and installed and Differential serviced.

MsExcel parts spreadsheet kept on the car. It has over 800 items that I removed and installed on this car during its repairs. Also, there are over 900 photos and documents on the car that will be given to buyer.

You will note the hood is lifted on the right side. PO did not know the cause when he got the car from his seller. That seller should have replaced the hood due to bent hood framework. I have a good hood that will be given to the buyer. It will need sanding and painting. Since this car's paint is 14 years old, it might be time for it to be refreshed. But it still looks good when washed and polished.

I have put all the pertinent info in a PDF document so it is easier to pass out info on our car, if you know some one is looking for a Vair. It includes the recent repairs to the wiper system.

We drove it Saturday through Monday and it still gets the looks and questions. People like to walk around the old 4 door to see it up close.

One more item to adjust I hope to get to this week and it is dealing with the heater box heat valve.

Donna and I took the Silverado Z71 with the 12 foot cargo trailer and the 66 More Door this past weekend Corvair Springfest. This was the first time I drove the car to any event. All 312 miles were mine. Vehicles behaved and performed flawlessly.

Nothing special happened on the trip except about 70 miles away from Helen, the Georgia State Patrol had all 4 lanes of state road 22 blocked going into Comer. Seems an 18 wheeler with trailer flipped into the medium. We were directed to a detour route. Nice detour. Rough gravely pavement for about 4 miles, right turn onto another similar road. That is where the pavement stopped 80 yards later. We were on a dry red clay road with a top cover of gravel. Then 3 miles later, we entered the "forest". No sunlight penetrated the forest to dry the road from the night's rain. Now we are on a slick red clay road going down hill. I pulled over to let a crossover vehicle to pass. This got Donna with our truck behind me. I now controlled the speed of both of our vehicles. Donna had never driven on a slick red clay road, much less with a 6k lb. truck and 3k lb. loaded trailer. After about 8 miles, we finally got off the red slick road and about 8 more miles onto another gravely paved road, then we were back on SR 22 heading to Comer.

We pulled over in Comer for our needed fuel stop . We surveyed the vehicles and trailer. Lots of red mud over the lower sections of the vehicles. We fueled up and proceeded into Helen GA.

This was quite a story to explain the dirty vehicles and how the Georgia State Patrol provided us a free tour of the beautiful north Georgia area, free of the environmental people trying to save our planet. It was a beautiful forest without people running around trashing it.

Donna and I had lots of lookers at the 66 More Door this past weekend at Corvair Springfest. As usual, no one stepped up with the cash. Lots of comments about a nice looking car, I wish I had the car, and so on, and so on. I drove it out of the mountains (100 miles) and Donna took it on home. We got home about 8:30 pm. The vehicles will have sprinklers turned on them to wash the remainder of red clay off them, that the rain in Helen didn't get off.

We tried to get out at 8 am leaving the hotel, I saw a guy with a 2004 Dodge 3500 diesel dully having starting problems. He had no friends or family there to help. So we decided to help out. We determined the aux battery was only 11.3 volts. I took him to O'Reilly to get a battery. When it was installed and a start attempt was made, the starter spewed sparks and smoke. He was told to cease starting. I told him starter was burnt up and he need another. He called around for a diesel mechanic and finally got ahold of one after 15 minutes. The guy arrived with a O'Reilly starter and proceeded to replace it. Two bolts need heat to be removed. We said our goodbyes and left our number in case they wanted to let us now when they got on the road north to Covington GA. About 90 minutes later, we got the call the truck was fixed and they were just leaving Helen.

ps: he enjoyed the 18 mile round trip in the More Door.

Just a note about a message I got about this car. A gentleman in Florida said got info from his friend who attended Corvair Springfest that my More Door was for sale. He is looking for a reliable Vair. We are going to text and talk today. He is planning to come up and see the car tomorrow. I will try to work out a test drive with me while he is here. No hopes as many people have looked at the car in past 3 years.

SOLD TODAY

The gentleman and his wife arrived after lunch time. A bit of time was taken to show all the safety and reliability updates Donna and I did on the More Door. Paul & Liz took the car out on a drive to check it out, while I was getting other items ready for transport. When they came back, we negotiated the deal. They became the proud owner of the Regal Red 1966 Corvair Monza 4 door. We loaded up the More Door and went to the house to finish the paperwork. The Bill of Sale was signed by both parties and they departed for the sunny south.

I went back to being an owner of a non-operational Corvair. But we did get Corvair EFI's in-tank fuel pump / sender installed. Hope to to more tomorrow.

If any one needs a good trunk lid (hood) PM and we will exchange email addresses. Photos will then be sent.

Thank you Doug. It was nice to take the new owners around the car to talk about what I did. They enjoyed the show & tell from my point of view. Good conversation both ways.

It was acceptable for both parties. That is ll that needs to be said.

I am helping him with data he needs that wasn't in my spreadsheet, like fluids and info on the lower control arm bushings. The Vair develop a front suspension/steering twitch recently that i was troubleshooting. I had finished isolating that it was not the steering gearbox. I had put in a set of aftermarket bushings on one side and a set of Calif Corv bushings on the other. I am believing after 5 years, the aftermarket bushings may have deteriorated. He doesn't have to keep me informed about the car, but I will help him with tech info on known issues we discussed during the sale. I have a courtesy light socket identification task left to find what style was used in the car. It is a dual wire socket.
