'61 FC tranny question
Is there a way to tell the difference from the case of a '61 FC 4spd tranny w/ the lower 1st gear than from other FC trannys?
Re: '61 FC tranny question
I don't know of any codes or stampings that would ID one of these but here are some clues: If there's no provision for a backup switch (bottom of trans, front) that pegs it as an FC trans. AND from there you find a casting date and it ends in "0" (1960) there's a pretty good chance you have one. If it's a no-switch provision trans still attached to it's original "BQ" code differential there's a good chance you have one too. A back-up switch pretty much means that it's not a 4.26:1 trans. The easiest way is to shift it into first, install an input shaft, and count the number of turns required to turn the output shaft a full rotation. You can also pull the side cover and count teeth on first gear.
