'62 Ramp revamp

Post by atwistedgrip »

I purchased this Rampside last October in Ramona, CA.
Since then I've had the transmission swapped from a early '61 FC (4.26 first gear) and rebuilt.
Also I've had the differential swapped and rebuilt with 3.27 gears.
Mike Moreno of the IECC rebuilt the engine with +60 forged pistons and rods and reground 0T-10 camshaft.
Brake cylinders, drums, and shoes have been redone along with fresh brake fluid.
It pulls nicely through all the gears and stops good.
A few weeks ago I bartered some bodywork with Kapp's Kustoms in Corona.
So far everything is going smooth, except for the ramp door... mucho bondo!

It's great that you are restoring a classic.

That ramp must have been extra heavy with all that filler.

Upgraded to new shocks, front and rear.
Old shocks were a PIA to get off... had to cut them off.
I used Gabriel "Guardian" shocks meant for a 1970-1980 Dodge D-150 that I picked up from Autozone for about $18/ea.
They seemed pretty affordable for a gas shock and come with a lifetime warranty.
The shocks had to be slightly modified to fit the lower mounts but work great!
I will be probably be adding these these shocks to all my other FCs... I think they will work on EMs too.

I made a pit stop on the way home to check the (slow) progress on my '62 Rampy.
Overall, I think it is coming along nicely...

Coming along nicely. You must be getting anxious now. Honestly I was wondering how it was going, thanks for the update.

Auto body guy emailed me some pics of the progress. He's stalled on my project for a bit because of money making opportunities for him (I bartered work with him)... Hey, I totally understand. We all got bills to pay and mouths to feed, Right?
Anyways, he's hoping to have his part of the trade finally completed next week...

Ok, after 4 months I finally got my Rampy back from the auto body guy I traded work with. It took what seemed forever, but I know there was a lot of work to be done and I'm glad he took his time to do a quality job. Still much more work to do though... like hopefully paint. For now, I'm going to drive it for a little while.

Notice the front license plate holes are shaved... And, I lost a hub cap somewhere on the way home. Boo!

Trying to figure out my next (low budget) project. Hopefully sandblast the rims and repaint with new Coker wide white walls.
