Here is a pic of a little drawing showing the goal of laying out foundation of chassis.
You locate the bottom longitudinal tubes at a height from the ground.
Then you locate the crossmembers the same way.
It is a matter of connecting the crossmembers to the frame.
Designing and building upright pieces. Then making them and welding it all together.
From then on you are basically 'hanging on' the rest of the race car.

This is a really old post!
Best thing I can say is use the trial and error method.
This is a guide not a set of plans.
Get some 1" square 1/16" wall steel tubing and a quarter sheet of 1/16" thick sheet metal.
Build a mule frame to work out all the dimensions.
Will post a simple top view drawing of a two seater frame.
When done with mule frame duplicate it in final size tubing.
Cut off the mule tubing and sheet to keep around shop for building stools or tables.
