Re: ENTER- Corvair of the Month October 2014
Here is my October submission, it would be cool to win my birth month!
Not your average 1965 Monza Toronado V8 Conversion
A little background, it was first built in the early 70's as a Crown Conversion with 4 wheel disc brakes, and air conditioning. The story goes that the guy was tired of stuff breaking (transmissions and trans axles) so he had it converted to a Toronado kit by the Vair House in Reno Nevada.
Although the car was a well optioned Monza with auto transmission, air conditioning and Evening Orchid paint, it was fully color changed to black in the 2004 re-build. I have known this car since it was built in 2004. I tried to buy it at the time but it was out of my price range. When it was sold by Jim, in 2005 he took a bunch of the parts off like the rear discs, the tele wheel, the AC, and more. After it changed hands twice, i purchased it in non running condition last year, I have since got it in running condition, and have been collecting parts to restore the air conditioning and if I can manage to keep it, I will do the rear disc brakes again as well. Right now it is running 15" GTA wheels, but the plan is either 16" GTA's or Staggered Torq Thrust style wheels. It does run and drive now but I am working on the interior and some small wiring issues before it goes on longer trips.
Here are some of the highlights of the car now:
1968 Corvette 327
Toronado th425 tansaxle with switch pitch torque converter
shaved gas door
shaved antenna
shaved trim
shaved door handles
Clear front signals
Acura GSR seats front and rear
Yenko deck lid
fiberglass cove with 1/4" space around for hot air removal
custom engine cover with heat and sound deadening
Wilwood master cylinder and proportioning valve
Griffin dual pass aluminum radiator
Console guage pod from Chevy II
and much much more

Re: ENTER- Corvair of the Month October 2014
Well, here I am again. My cars been out of service a few months but we're back in business so I thought I'd give COTM another shot. This is my 61 Monza Coupe when I bought it in Sept. 2012
To make a long story short, I replaced the front half of the L.F. fender, both lower rocker panels behind the doors, the whole interior, and got it repainted the original Ermine White, and replaced all the wiring except for the trunk / headlight harness. I did all the work myself except stripping and shooting the paint, and reupholstering the front seats. While it was down I replaced the rear springs as well. It's been quite a ride but I have really enjoyed it. I hope you like the pics. I made the wood dash and glove box inserts out of Oak and stained them Ebony. . This is what I ended up with. I'm looking forward to joining my club, Corvair Houston, in a few rides and the Houston Autorama soon, I have some catching up to do.

Re: ENTER- Corvair of the Month October 2014
I just had to comment on your exceptional 1961 Monza entry. It looks like you did a beautiful job, and I really like the mild but attractive personalized customizing you applied to this restoration.
Of the ten Corvairs that I have had in my family, your Corvair reminds me so much of the very first Corvair I remember as an eight year old child — when my parents bought their first new Corvair in 1961. It was a white 1961 Monza coupe with a red interior that was very similar to your Corvair. I have always loved the look of EM Corvairs with red interiors, and your car brings back a lot of memories.
Good luck with your COTM entry!
Would it be possible for you to post some detailed photos of the custom instrument panel and dashboard work you did in this car? Your description of it was intriguing, but I can barely see any detail of your work in the one front interior photograph.BIGTWIN wrote:I made the wood dash and glove box inserts out of Oak and stained them Ebony.

Re: VOTE- Corvair of the Month October 2014
I'd like to enter my 1963 Corvair in the October corvair of the month. When I first got the car there was nothing in it no seats, no door panels, no top just a frame for the top. What parts that did come with it were just laying inside of it so it was a jigsaw puzzle to put back together. After two years of working on it off and on I finally got it close to being done thank goodness for the internet to locate all the parts, around my location there are very few corvairs. The restoration was done by myself not perfect but good enough.

Congratulations to Dean Gemberling (ihscomputers) on
your second win of the year for Corvair of the Month!

Re: VOTE- Corvair of the Month October 2014
Yes, as a matter of fact, Fast Eddie, I DO own a '64 Monza convertible!
BUT, it's just a "rolling shell" at this time.
It was the first Corvair that I ever bought!
Thanks, I'm looking forward to the "Corvair Of The Year" competition!
