NG from Upstate SC

Post by miesrules »

Hi everyone,
I purchased a '66 Monza convertible last weekend and I'm looking forward to getting it on the road. I've got a few issues before that happens (passenger front brake grabs, the passenger rear wheel has a lot of toe out, alternator, needs new air cleaner assembly, and it stalls when you put it in drive). What could be causing the car to stall when you put it in drive? The fuel pump looks original and the car doesn't have much gas in the filter after starting up. Can you rebuild the fuel pump, or will I have to order a new one from Clark's?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

If you need a new fuel pump. order one from Clarks.
Keep the old for an emergency spare.
Brakes grabbing vcould be from rusty drums from the car sitting.
but most likely will be from a wheel cylinder leaking onto the shoes.
Toe out on one side may indicate something bent.
Do you mean it is either leaning in or out?

Toe out would be like pointing into oncoming traffic.

Stalling when going into gear is likely either a low idle, severly retarded timing, or a vacuum leak. Most likely culprit is the rubber connectors at the base of the carbs where the vacuum balance tube mounts, or lack of a PCV oriface tube. You do not mention if the car is automatic or not. If it is automatic the transmission modulator is vacuum controlled and if leaking can cause this symptom as well.

The rear wheels are adjustable for toe-in and camber. Camber issues are common as the adjusters can slip. Usually the problem is the top of the rear tires leaning in too far. Severe toe-out is possibly an adjustment, or maybe a bent trailing arm.

New air cleaner assembly......hmmm do not think i have seen a new one of those in years:)...there are plenty of good used ones around though. I have some if you need.

Thanks guys. It is an automatic. I'll check the transmission modulator line to see if it's shot. I probably need to sync the carbs as well and go over all the vacum lines.
