64 Monza 4x1 140 pg.

Post by Torskdoc423 »

After 50 years of minivans, &trucks, finally getting rid of my itch for another corvair. Had a 61 500 80hp/pg in Navy back in 70's. Never had problem with it. Got totalled by a truck (it was parked in lot, and truck crunched front end). Life, kids, etc., then got in way.

Fast fwd to April this year. Wife and I on cross country camping trip and planned a stop at Shades corvairs in Hastings, Neb. If you get a chance, stop by. Initially I had a hankering for a 64 Spyder or a 65/66 Corsa (turbo'ed), but because she can't drive a stick we compromised on a 64 Monza with a 140 and PG. Spent an hour looking it over (1/2 that underneath) and was satisfied it was rust free. (Welding pick hammer lightly tapping underneath was useful.)

Called them last week, vehicle still available so deposit was put down. He's getting it road ready(brakes and dual master conv), new gastank, tuneup, some paint chip touchups, etc.

The 140 and PG were rebuilt by Larry Claypool in 1989, and car was put in garage undergoing restoration thru 90's, and early 2000's by previous owner after purchase in 1980. Shades bought it a few years ago from estate. Previous owner installed a Spyder Dash and covered the instrument cluster, radio bezel and glove box with a wood fascia, did a good job too. Interior all new from carpet to headliner, including door fuzzies and gaskets. You can see pics on Shades site https://www.shadesclassiccars.com/listi ... e-stk-cns/

Ansen sprints or ET slots (we haven't figured out which yet) on all 4 corners, shod with (CORRECTION)Maxxis 185/80R13's.

Plans are electric fuel pump with electronic controller, repro AM/FM Radio with bluetooth (spoiled by Spotify on my truck), remote mirror on driver side with original going to passenger side. Electronic ignition from Clark's (I can still set points in my sleep, but back doesn't like bending over at 70, LOL).

I'll get it delivered around Oct 1st. Incentive to de-junk my garage now.

update on my '64 monza
Shades called today with update on car. IT'S ALIVE. Overhauled all 4 carbs, new oil & filter. Fired right up on portable fuel tank. Video of cam break-in, unknown if previous owner who was in process of restoration when he passed had run engine. So Chris went brand new run in. Complete brakes from dual master, hard & rubber lines wheel cyl's, linings. New gas tank, gas lines look good, so flush and blow out. Finish connecting spyder dash gauges, other piddly little stuff .

The rectangular opening for the shift indicator is molded on the backside of dash. Dremel & a flat file will open that right up. That 'll frost a few purist. I don't really need the indicator, but the wife will. So function wins out over form. I'll post engine run in video when I get to my laptop in a bit.

GREAT LOOKING CAR!! Yes, I'm shouting.... :dogrun: :dogrun: :dogrun: :dogrun: :dogrun:

Maxxis 175/80R13's.

Sure that is not 185/80R13?

If they are 175/80R13 then they are either very old (greater than 10 years) or trailer rated tires, not for car use. Please have Chris check.

My dyslexia kicked in. They ARE 185/75R13's. About 6 years old. Sidewalls without cracks and I didn't see anything in between the treads separating when I inspected it in APRIL. Should be ok another year before I put new one's on it.

Figured down the road the 64 will need some help in the form of a trailer (shows, gatherings, etc out of local (>150 miles) area, so the old girl and I hustled up to Carlisle today and bought a new 18ft car hauler.

She figured since I enjoy driving 18hours a day, I could drive to Shades(Baltimore MD to Hastings NE & back) when the Monza's ready, pick it up and bring it home, and she could get some peace and quiet at home with the Shelties.

ROAD TRIP :tu: :chevy: :tu:

Good to hear from you, I also have a 64 Monza PG with a 1968 140.
I put a block I got at California corvairs in the old mechanical feul pump and put an electric one under the passenger seat outside the car. I also have an electronic ignition. The car runs well. One of,the things I did was have the carburators rebuilt by Steve Goodman in Colorado. I'm glad I did. HE informed me that I had four primary carburators of the 65 or 66 variety. It's a nice set up and runs good but always a little finicky. I think I might splurge for a Roger Parent linkage set up.
That's my story.
Welcome to the forum. I hope you are able to share your successes as well as your failures.

May need to go "Midnight Auto Supply". I read on forum somewhere Roger is either retiring or stopping production. Can't find the thread.

Down to the final week or so. Shades called last night with an update. All the electrical systems are working, engine is tight as a tick (compress 145-155 on all 6, no leaks, oil pressure is good.), waiting on lug nuts for the wheels (had to special order them.) Once they get'em, test drives (tranny checks out so far in garage, but need to check shift speeds at various throttle settings and kickdown, along with Carbs on street hot and cold).

There was a mouse house in the heater box. They took it apart, cleaned, repainted, replaced the blown motor and chewed up fan, and cleaned out all the rest of the system. Heater works as designed now.

Should be ready by end of next week, and I can bring it home.

1st thing going on is Craig's(Racers) Electric fuel pump kit, (full monty with the auto prime, LOP Switch, and the bypass plate for the Mech fuel pump). Thermocouple for the EM Head Cylinder gauge (it has a spyder dash) and tie in a vacuum source for the manifold vac/boost gauge).

Pass side mirror, Door edge guards, Engine stickers, and various missing placards. Maybe a luggage rack on the engine cover (I like it better on the EM's than the LM's for some reason).

I'm getting to be like a 9 year old waiting for Christmas so I can shoot my eye out!

Mitch called last night. Other than pulling to Right it runs very well. So off to the alignment shop next week. If everything shakes out ok there, then it looks like week of the 10th I'll be making a road trip to Neb.

Since last post, the car is finished, paid off, and waiting for me to get out there. I spent 7 weeks in hospital between Thanksgiving and 12th of Jan, with a colon blockage (partial), that was finally removed. So I'm re-cooperating right now. Chris Shade is storing it in his museum piece bldg out back (with about 40 other corvairs). Plan is with Dr. OK, a friend and I will make trip to Hastings Ne from Baltimore in mid March with trailer to retrieve it. I've got a stack of parts and manuals to do some stuff to it (pass side mirror, seat belts, vairtrix thermistor to left side head, Racer's electric fuel pump kit, engine stickers, sunvisor info slider, tire and jack placard for spare in engine compt, etc.) So I'll be busy for a couple weeks afterward. Then it's Cars and Coffee locally to get my feet wet, and some local car shows. :woo: With no other Corvairs there, I'll park in amongst the 911 Porsches and fein innocence (Well, it IS rear engined and AirCooled),
