Re: Corvair Lakewood 61 - NL

Nice job. A buddy used JB Weld cauld in the tube to fill the cracks and it didn't hold up. I grind out all the old loose plastic, then fill with the old liquid JB Weld (you have to use tape to make dams to hold it in place) then after a couple days I sand it down. So far it has held up very well, n...

Re: odd interior parts/decoration

Most people just install carpet on the floors. It is better Quieter) and will not hold as much moisture causing rust out as the old rubber mats did. rubber carpet would indeed be really hard to find. even if someone had some NOS in a box there is a high likely hood that it would be dry rotted and n...

Re: My first Corvair, 1963 2d, 3spd

That would be the front main seal. Changing it is a little more involved:) Nope you need to remove the powertrain separate the engine and transaxle and replace the seal. Are you sure it is only engine oil? Diff gear oil can also leak into the bellhousing. In any case of pulling the powertrain to fix...

Re: My first Corvair, 1963 2d, 3spd

Rear main seal is pretty easy. If you get a special tool from Clark's or Blue Chip Tools you can get the pulley off without even lowering the engine at the rear. Changing the rear main seal only requires removing the crank pulley, prying off the old seal and tapping a new one into place. Do not use ...

Re: windlace trim?

The repro plastic ones fit poorly and break really easy. i have not tried the pot metal ones they may be better. unless they are good finding some NOS or good solid used ones is a better bet than the plastic repros.

Re: Bushing Name?

DUDE!! Get their paper catalog!! It is so much better than trying to find a search term to look for it online. In this case you go to the rear suspension section and look at the breakdown diagram and the arrow and number associated with the part you want. done. 400+ pages of goodness. Free also.

Re: 66 power glide

Might see if Corvair Ranch in PA can supply one. shipping of trans and core will cost but not horrendous. You could actually buy a used one and chances are way better than not that it will work fine. auto trans failure requiring rebuild are not common. Theya re pretty bulletproof. Clark's offers reb...

Re: 66 monza

a complete stick shift parts car is the best way to go. There are a lot of little things needed like pulleys, wiring harness ideally instrument cluster, clutch and shift linkages, transaxle, trans crossmember, bellhousing etc., etc.

Re: Springfest is On!

There are a lot more than 4:) A buddy posted photos and a video from the area by the autocross area on Facebook and there were at least 20 or so in those photos and that was early this afternoon. Historically a lot of people arrive this afternoon and evening. Usually there are 200-300 or more regist...

Re: Removing the top dashpad

Replacing the padded dash is not particularly easy either. The replacement cover Clark's sells is just the vinyl and foam which you fit, overlay and glue to your existing dash pad metal bracket after removing all the old vinyl and foam. There is no easy really good fix for a torn up dash pad besides...

Re: Removing the top dashpad

There are at least 6 of these nuts under each pad. 4 are near the speaker grille opening and the other 2 are near the outer ends of the pad. Some later years may use more, but 65's have 6 from my experience.

Re: 67 Carbs wont idle

Did you balance the carbs per the proper procedure? If one of your carbs has a rod that is bent a lot more than the other something is likley not correct either in assembly or adjustments that are supposed to be made during rebuild. I would make sure I had balanced them if possible and then I would ...

I take it that the early and late model flex plates are different as well?
164 engine flex plates have a small hole in them just outside the mounting bolt circle where it mounts to the crank.

Steele was the name I was looking for, thank you. I had even written it down but misplaced it. One of the benefits that comes with age🤦‍♂️ Thanks again Steele's front windshield gasket fits better than the one Clark's has b een selling requiring no side stainless trim modification to sit flush.
