Re: 1964 Monza Sedan

Check our stock Corvair wheel back spacing against you new aluminum rims. From that you can see if there is any change in wheel "offset". A 1/2" change to moving the center of the tire outward from the center of the car is tolerable, but it will change the scrub radius. Not ideal, but...

Re: Voltage Regulator Question

If your existing coil is questionable, replace it with another 1.5 ohm standard output coil. Keep the old, but functional one in the trunk as a spare. Also confirm the voltage you see at the coil positive terminal (measuring the voltage with the ignition key ON and the ignition points closed — or w...

Re: Break-In Oil?

The one thing the video said about a new cam failure was "There are no 100% answers". The surprising fact is brand new flat tappet cams and lifters do fail in spite of best intentions. ZDDP is an anti-scuffing agent. Too much in daily use causes corrosion. Back in the 40's and into the 50'...

Re: Voltage Regulator Question

Sage advice. My coil does appear to operate as intended. However, it gets very hot. It seems to be aftermarket and completely unmarked. (I am measuring between 1.6 and 2.2 ohms between + and -). I do not know when it was installed or if it was chromed out later, or label peeled off an aftermarket c...

Re: What you see is what you get

Hardened valve seats was in relation to the propensity for 140's to have issues. Beyond that, I was under the impression that there was an engine modification that needed to be done because of the switch to unleaded fuel. So, Corvairs are immune to that? Great! Thanks Yes, Corvairs from the factory...

Re: Voltage Regulator Question

Very good explanations of way the fan light works, and the the 3 vs 1 wire generator. However, it seems like my alternator was further modified, as the fan light then appears to be working fine. Turn key and it lights up; started and the light goes out. I took further pictures, as I just recalled t...

Re: 1964 Monza Sedan

Got your PM, and I had also confirmed with one of the Philadelphia club members that it is indeed a late model cross member with early model spindles and brakes. Should be all good in a few weeks when it is ready for an alignment. Glad it is working out. I think you'll be happy with the bigger LM s...

Re: Voltage Regulator Question

Brad --- Good post about the fan belt warning lamp. The 10SI internal voltage regulator THREE wire unit controls the FAN/GEN warning lamp in the same way as the external voltage regulator 10DN alternator. BTW --- it is a clever design as the FAN/GEN warning lamp not only tells you when the fan belt ...

Re: 64 Transaxle Drain Plug

66vairguy, Thanks for your reply and for correcting my misinformation. I agree, not too concerned about the lack of drain plug - I have a little hand-operated pump with vinyl tubing at both ends and will give that a try. I tried a hand pump --- not a great experience. Same with installing new gear ...

Re: '62 Monza convertible "Ralphie"

Nice job on the crankshaft. As you learned, just because something is NOS doesn't mean aging hasn't affected it. Are you going to have it magnafluxed? BTW - one issue with the Vega aluminum blocks was inconsistent pour mix (high silicone mix developed by Reynolds Aluminum). Early on this was such an...

Re: 64 Transaxle Drain Plug

My notes show only the 60-63 models years had a transaxle drain plug. I know many just must install a drain plug, but it simply isn't needed. It is only necessary to drain and refill the transaxle about every 30,000 miles (GM never did state how often to do it). Considering most of us drive our Corv...

Re: Voltage Regulator Question

Thank you so much bbodie52 and 66cvairguy. You both have been above and beyond helpful. I guess it is obvious this is my first classic car. My oldest car was a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire I had until 2016. I don't know why it never occurred to me to find the manuals on Clarks. I got many a part form them,...

Re: What you see is what you get

I have a 62 and a 65. I paid 1800 for the 62 and 2400 for the 65. I bought all my parts before the prices went crazy and have between 6 to 8k in each. I do all my own work except for wheel alignment and mounting so labor wasn't a big issue. Both had running engines and working transmissions but nee...

Re: Voltage Regulator Question

You showed a picture of the voltage regulator. Not relevant as your setup does not use it. The 66 Chassis Shop Manual Supplement has wiring diagrams on pgs. 12-4 through 12-7. GM wiring diagrams of the time didn't conform to any electrical engineering standards. They were meant to used by mechanics....

Re: 1963 Monza 900 Convertible

I did mean to add that it could have possibly been a dealer add on. O know some manufacturers offered "add on" kits. I noticed the electrical nightmare under the dash as well (see my other post in "67 stalls"). Yes, the refrigerant dilemma. I remember those classes during the &q...

Re: Voltage Regulator Question

The alternator rear housing is a 10SI internally regulated alternator. At the rear side of the housing is a place marked that should have a two wire connector plugged in. Your picture does not show that. Please confirm if the plug is there or isn't. If there is no two wire connector at "1R 2F&q...
