Re: Stuttering/surging

 As you seem to have just proven, the car needs more timing advance. But not just static initial advance, it needs timing advance at slow engine speeds (provided by vacuum advance) and then it transitions to more advance at high engine speeds (as the vacuum advance disengages due to low leve...

Re: Stuttering/surging

Could it more than likely be just a bad valve spring some where?

Maybe I should go to a 1/2 or 3/4 turns from zero lash (just to see what happens)? Is this a pointless or stupid idea?

Re: Stuttering/surging

Hmmm 102 should not have a balancer on it. What about improperly clocked distributor? What do you mean by this? I’m not an expert on all terms... but surely if i can adjust the distributor so it gives me an advance of 13 or 16 and the engine idles at around 550 or 600 then everything is ok with the...

It’s going OK at 13 and OK at above 18

So this is weird

Re: Stuttering/surging

Is your dwell tach needle bouncing at idle or is it steady?? If it's moving does it go up then down or drop then go back up? I have a digital Actron dwell meter... fluctuates a little at idle from 31.5 to 31.8 At 1500 rpm it goes down slightly to 32.1/32.2 1961 Greenbrier, 1962 Rampside and 1964 Mo...

Re: Stuttering/surging

As the advance in timing did help, an immediate thought comes to the Harmonic Balancer. Many of the older balancers have a rubber ring that deteriorates. This allows the timing mark to actually move. If this were to be the case, could cause "jolting" or other vibrations. I have no harmoni...

Re: Stuttering/surging

It sounds like you've certainly thought this through and touched all the bases. It sounds like you are describing an unusual surging and uneven engine operation that only occurs at low engine speeds with minimal loading. Everything seems to smooth out and run better at higher speeds with more load ...

Re: Stuttering/surging

An idea. Try advancing the spark more. Additional timing advance may give better performance. Let us know what happens Tried this and the 102hp went like a ‘rocket’... probably advanced to at least 30/36 with some testing... is this possible to advance this much and still go well? However the jolti...

Stuttering/surging

OK, i’ve put the 102hp engine into my Greenbrier and have had a few problems. Had a weird vacuum leak that is now solved :) The only problem I have now is a stuttering/juddering/surging when I just cruise at low speed. I’ve near enough checked and changed everything and I’m pretty sure everything is...

Re: Petronix Flame-Thrower

In my 1961 80hp Ive been using a 1.5 ohm with points for about 2 years and just this winter installed a Mallory Hyfire which is triggered by the points with the same 1.5ohm flamethrower and it's been great. No issues at all, knock wood. Sent from my LG-H931 using Tapatalk Thanks for the info Lostbo...

Re: Petronix Flame-Thrower

  If I haven't confused you already, here are a couple of other suggestions and ideas... It is not a bad idea to relocate the coil mount position at the same time. The standard installation of the ignition coil was always mounting it directly on the right cylinder head. The cylinder he...

Re: Petronix Flame-Thrower

I'm not surprised about the Petronix confusion on the internet. I'm still amazed by the amount of incorrect Petronix information out there. While Petronix instructions and catalog have improved, specific make information is still vague. You may have this information - Ballast (wire) on Corvairs is ...

Petronix Flame-Thrower

IMG_2788.JPG I have 2 Flame-Thrower coils. One is 1.5 ohm and the other is 3.0 ohm. Can these be used (if a ballast resistor is used) on a Corvair? Getting yes/no when I check out on the Internet. Petronix says yes... but says the 1.5 is for a V8? IMG_2787.JPG Any info/help appreciate 1961 Greenbri...
