Re: Does anyone know this person?

Yes my 140 has a bunch of components from him. I am lucky because he is about 75 miles away so I usually go to his shop which is at his house.

Looks like alcohol injection on that 180 engine. Very nice.

Not to highjack this tread but what is the length of the differential dipstick for a '65 Corsa.

Garage Dreams

I happened to turn this on and self taught car photographer (John Jackson) goes to his shoots in a 1964 Corvair van. He puts over 60k miles on the van per year. Has a total of 170K on the van currently.

Re: Oil pump housing

Yep, 50 psi with the same cordless drill. It took 6.5 qts. using the Otto pan. Tested the pressure after adding 3 qts and got the same 50 psi. Guess the gallery plugs are installed.

Re: Oil pump housing

I to thought of the oil level and over filled it but still low pressure. Actually the gauge read approx. 2 psi when the engine started. I pulled the oil pump housing and found that there was no spring in the pressure relief valve. Interesting because I was told it was ready to go. I am slowly puttin...

Re: Oil pump housing

Corvair oil pressure spec. is 35-40PSI. Typically 38PSI hot. Your 20PSI on the bench was the first indication of a problem, either gauge, point of measurement, or engine. A stock pump at room temperature with 10W30 will start to indicate pressure at about the equivalent of 200 engine RPM and should...

Thanks for all your kind words and an education on Buick motors. I will tell Kenny Duttweiler that I found a new person to help with my next rebuild.

Re: Oil pump housing

I have built MANY Buick V6's over the past 18 years. High volume high pressure pumps wear the #1 cam bearings as well as wear the cam sensor drive gear and/or the bore for the roll pin. If you have anything other that a stock late 86-87 Buick cam you will have a groove cut into the #1 cam bearing. ...

Re: Oil pump housing

Who put the "numbers" on the pump cover? Where are you measuring the oil pressure? Are you sure your gauge is correct? The manual tells how to measure and select the cover gasket thickness, BUT ALWAYS verify with platigauge. I've also had the issue of one side having greater clearances th...

Re: advice - how far do I take this?

Man I really feel for you. I wonder if the cam was reinstalled correctly after the block was separated. Also when the engine was disassembled, did you replace the lifters or use the old ones. If the old lifters were used, they should be installed on the same camshaft lob it was running on.

Re: Oil pump housing

Bob, I understand the issues with an HV pump but for right now I am trying to figure why I am not getting any oil pressure. The existing pump is setup for .003" clearance according to the numbers written on the cover. Maybe a stuck bypass valve is the issue. Clearances on the mains are .0028&qu...

Re: Oil pump housing

So I put this engine together with the high volume pump and housing that Starr Cooke provided and when I did the bench test to prime the pump it was difficult to get any pressure. I pulled the pump cover and added packed the gears with KY (something I always do with Buick rebuilds). I also added mor...

Oil pump housing

Does the engine need to be removed to pull the housing. This is on a late model car with a 140 engine.

Re: Engine & trans removal

I just pulled my engine out for the second time and each time I learn a little more. I would use a good set of jack stands. I purchased 12 ton stands because they gave me the lift with out having to stack wood etc which is unsafe. I also have a 1 ton lift table but not a way to adjust the engine ang...

I wanted to get opinions on the pros and cons of using a HV pump on a street engine.
