You can remove the head(s) without removing the engine, just lower it a bit at the rear and take out the carb studs.

Your tank is in much better shape than mine was! I saved this tank via chain shaking, Evaporust and Red Kote tank liner but it took way too many hours and ~$90 in materials. I wouldn't do that again. Castrol GTX Classic is high zinc and widely available. Amazon sells a 5-qt jug for $25:

Only downside is that it's 20W-50. Better for warmer weather and older motors. Supposedly too thick for break-in.
