Re: Coil and Resistance wire question
gasman63 --- I recall you car is a mix of parts and I think it had the Spyder instrument cluster. The 62-63 shop manual does a poor job of showing the different wiring for the Spyder. I mentioned the 62-63 used a different ceramic ballast and coil. Here is an article from SCC about it. You have can ...

Re: Coil and Resistance wire question
As I like to remind Brad --- the 3.0 ohm coil results in inferior coil output voltages and spark at the spark plug during starting. It's a lazy way to avoid using a ballast resistor. Adequate for warm weather use.

Sorry to hear that, but I understand as I'm in the same situation. This summer I'll be selling off spare parts and making plans to move on to less physically demanding hobbies.

Welcome to the group. Emissions testing? Here in CO my car (63) was exempt. Are you sure you have to deal with that on a EM Corvair? I was told high altitude areas in Colorado require emissions testing for ALL cars. I recall Steve Goodman saying he had to make Corvairs pass emissions testing. That ...

Re: Coil and Resistance wire question
Both the resistance wire and the yellow wire should be connected to the positive side of the coil. The yellow wire only is energized when the starter is cranking. When the key is released the power goes through the resistance wire, the connection at the starter is broken when the solenoid is not en...

Re: John’s 65 sedan
The assembly manual only shows the drivers side mirror installation. The 1966 Accessories Installation Manual isn't much help as it says to use the paper template, but turned over to drill holes in the passenger door. Not much help. Like you, I found the drivers side factory mirror holes location di...

Re: New Member. 87 Octane gas
It is nice the seller called, BUT I have to agree with others here, the gasoline you bought should not have caused an idle problem due to octane. Lower octane fuel will "ping" under throttle (load), but has no effect at idle. It is possible there was debris in the new fuel or it stirred up...

Re: Revisiting the topic for a newbie - - - HIGH IDLE SPEED
The Tuesday News Report . . . Using a flashlight, I looked down the carburetor throats and it appeared that the left side was not closing all the way? Removed the left carb and checked the throttle plate, it just did not look like it was as closed as the right carb? Because I had installed new thro...

Re: Your Daily Dose of Zinc Philosophy (DDZP)
A good video that shows the pluses and minuses and how too much ZDDP is corrosive. Adding a bottle of this stuff to your regular oil is asking for trouble as oil expert Widman stated on the CCF. The optimal ratio is a NARROW range of values. Here is a little outline. Very little ZDDP was used in oil...

Man, that trunk came out nice! Re-assembly is the fun part for me. Enjoy it buddy! Are those the bowtie mirrors from clarks? I'm torn on using those or getting some mid-70's camaro junkyard mirrors. Someone previous already put holes in both doors. There are a few different offshore companies that ...

Yes it really gets visually satisfying when you start assembling all the trim onto the car. Looks great. BTW - nothing wrong with taking a break when other things in life come up. Avoids project "burn out". I had a few "parking" dings I worked out of my rear fenders. When I insta...

I just figured out why I like the Corvair forums. I can espouse ad nauseum on things Corvair without actually going out and doing anything. It seems like such a basic precept but I never thought of it like that. Jim Brandberg Yes and as you grow older you'll appreciate it more - :rolling: The other...

1965 110 auto. I will look into these. Thank you. I turned the idle screws back to normal this morning. Car started right up and idled nice til it warmed up. I just let the car run. As the car was warming up (a few minutes in), it was getting rougher and rougher and idle was getting lower and lower...

Re: Main fuse blowing
Good comments. The wire to the fuse box will handle up to 55Amps before it starts to overheat the insulation. Craig made a good point about voltage loss across a fuse. The lower the fuse amperage rating the higher it's resistance. Some of that can be negated by moving the alternator sense wire to af...

Re: Melting wires, simple question
The Pertronix site states the Pertronix (1) operates within a 9-12 volt range. For those cars that us a ballast resistor there should be no reason not to use the INPUT side of the resistor (which nominally should be 12 volts). Unfortunately I think a lot of people unknowingly use the OUTPUT of the ...
