Re: Scary Pressure and Temperature Light Comes On-

What oil are you running, what are your local temps outside, and have you deflashed the heads and cleared any mouses houses out from under the engine tin/oil cooler?

Re: Turbo usage

You can turbo literally any engine, but if you want it to last you have to consider the punishment some of the parts would take. I personally would trust the pistons, rods, crank and heads on a 110 to take turbo abuse. What I would upgrade are the exhaust valves, bronze guides, slightly stiffer spri...

Re: Starter nose cones break!

So quick to blame the flywheel... Check your timing, I had one instance where the timing was so far advanced it kicked back and snapped the starter nose. Which leads me to my next point- if your harmonic balancer (if you have one) has slipped, it’s not reporting TDC accurately anymore and must be re...

Re: Turbo AFR numbers...

Draw through engines in general tend to show more rich numbers than an N/A or injected engine, it's normal. But not 11 or even 8:1, that ain't normal for any gasoline engine! In the VW world, we have what's called "lean best idle". In other words you want to idle as lean as you possibly can, while m...

Re: 180 improvements

Cars are always a losing investment, good news is that with a turbo you can have nearly any performance level you wish with the twist of a knob, provided you take care of a few things first. Avoiding detonation is top priority, whether you do that with a safeguard or MS really isn’t important the ma...

Re: 180 improvements

Hi Nick, My recommendations as you know mainly revolve around getting more from the engine than you can get from a stock one, you can make a stock engine work acceptably but IMO it’s pretty boring and relatively tame that way. To each their own, if you’re looking for more obviously that entails more...

Re: 180 improvements

I mainly rebuild turbos, but depending on what all you need done I might be enticed to work on other things.

Re: Dropped valve seats part 3

With respect, a dropped valve is a pretty serious thing and also very easy to diagnose. What’s going on that caused you to pull the heads?

Re: Condensation in Pcv?

This sort of post always pops up this time of year, the colder weather makes it harder to build up enough oil temperature to evaporate the condensation that’s all.

Re: Dropped valve seats part 3

Strange, the small valve heads don’t typically have as many issue as the 140 style do. The shop probably isn’t experienced with aircooled stuff, the seats need more press so they don’t fall out.

Re: Engine sound and smoking

An open exhaust can also cause an engine to run leaner than it otherwise would, so if it was already sort of lean burned valves may be the result. Hope that’s not it, but I’ve seen it before.
