Re: Crank Case Oil Pan Studs?

I've never done that... is that the same as "inserts" as AZ Dave mentioned? And how do you go about putting helicoils in? Search Youtube for "Time serts" or "Helicoil", two popular brands with different approaches to thread repair. I've recently used a brand I found at Autozone and they worked quit...

Re: LED Exterior Lighting

Why not add something like Corvette tail lamps? THe LED tail lamps are awesome and Id love to have a set for my viar.what are you using to control the voltage? For me it's a matter of pride to make my own LED lamps if I can since that is how I approach all of my hobby needs. I enjoy the challenge. ...

Re: Crank Case Oil Pan Studs?

Some of the bolts are blind but many are not. Right and left sides for instance go straight through into the open area under the pushrod tubes inside the lower shrouds. I would install an insert in the stripped holes and leave the rest alone. You should not be torquing them that tight (although prev...

Re: JC's '67 500 coupe

Still can't get the rear drums off... I built a special tool to pull the rear drums in those situations. I used a couple of threaded J-bolts like they use with concrete footers and a big square tube that span across the drum to pull it off. I can get a photo if you are interested. It's a crude tool...

Re: The Corvair addiction

Here are the numbers. I haven't even decoded the body tag yet but I'm wondering if this came with a 140 or 110 from the factory. The engine top shroud looks like it used to have a fast idle solenoid mounted to it but this chassis never had A/C. Like most Corvair's I'm sure it's had a long line of me...

Re: The Corvair addiction

I did a few repairs this weekend like making the dual exhaust look even and general cleaning stuff. I shined her up a took a few better photos. The PO had coated the INSIDE of the trunk with that cheap underbody spray tar coating and it pretty much had made the trunk an un-usable mess of sticky blac...

Re: The Corvair addiction

Looks great...liking the full length trim strip . If you don't mind saying...what did you pay for it? On a Vair trivia note...do you know about the 140/PG 4 degree retarded crank gear? It was an impulse thing on ebay... I had just sold another car and had some cash so I was looking around and found...

The Corvair addiction

No big deal but I thought I would share a few pics of my latest aquisition. 1966 Monza Convertible with 140 and Powerglide My plans are to use it as a daily driver and not get all serious about it being perfect. It needs some mechanicals but nothing unusual. It needs a couple of seals for the engine...

Re: OLDS 455 TORO CORVAIR

I've never seen details like that although I know they must be out there. Clark's and several other vendors have old literature sheets for many of the popular V8 conversions. I have two Toro conversions myself and neither are done the same. I don't know for sure if they were partial kits from Mid-En...

Re: 572 Big Block '66 Vair

hmmm? I'll have to ask Darren about that. Even still a 427 in a Vair is impressive. Wonder why he felt the need to switch the covers? I dont like the fake cover on LoVair either. 572? 427? I wouldn't complain about a 427 either. Further down in that other thread I found he says that the valve cover...

Re: 572 Big Block '66 Vair

Beautiful car but I just saw this same one on another forum and it's not a 572. On that site the owner says the engine is a 427 with valve covers from a 572. Putting 572 covers on a 427 is a bit like that red LM Vair we have all seen with the fake LS7 plastic engine cover hiding a stock 110 undernea...

Re: Guess what I found?

Would LOVE to have that. I know many people back east might want it but the cost of shipping always kills the deal. It also would only come with a Bill of Sale since the PO never applied for one. It has to be dealt with quickly since in Mesa AZ you cannot park a car in your driveway without current...

Re: Guess what I found?

ugh. It was a total loss. All rust and no car. No saving that one. I wasn't as smart as you so I bought my "junk" find. The guy purchased it at an estate sale when the previous owner passed away. The new owner parked in the desert on his friend's property and it's been there for over 10 years. At f...

Re: Guess what I found?

I just got a reply today from the owner of the mystery car I'm chasing. 6 am Saturday morning is the time to go take a look at his mid-engine 396 project that I mentioned above. I hope it's not a wasted trip but at least it's only a 1/2 hour drive. I'll take pics either way and hopefully have good n...
