Re: cylinder head removal
When I put this Corvair on the lift I was so fixated on "What is wrong inside this side of the engine?? Burned valve? Holed piston?" that as I pulled off the tinwork, I forgot all about that baffle. Certainly, it didn't help that it was not there in the first place. There is one on the lef...

Re: cylinder head removal
Not really as I've not yet installed the rocker arms, this car is just a toy anyway, so all of this is being done for the fun of it. I must not have anything better to do.

Re: cylinder head removal
I did clean and lube the valve guides up good, but I did not lap the seats. I scratched and blew out all of the corrosion that I could see. I had not planned on pulling an engine out of the car and on the floor, all torn apart so I am just putting this back together so it will hopefully run as well ...

Re: cylinder head removal
My good-looking cylinder head was not quite what it first appeared to be, but I did install it tonight after work. I got the pushrod tubes installed along with the rocker studs and snugged everything down, still have to do a final torque which I will creep up to 30 Lb. Ft. When I removed the intake ...

Re: cylinder head removal
I got the cylinder head from Corvair Ranch yesterday and it looks good and quite clean. I am ordering valve stem seals from Clarks and then it should be ready to install. Thought I would go with the copper head gasket seals. My "machine shop guy" didn't think much of Teflon valve stem seal...

Re: cylinder head removal
Ok now I do feel better. I ordered a take-off head from Corvair Ranch which should arrive Monday, so I'll see what that looks like and go from there.

Re: cylinder head removal
Today I presented the head to an older silver-haired machinist at a shop that used to be a grocery store where I worked as a kid in 1977-1978. Anyway, he immediately goes "O a Corvair head" which I thought was a good sign, and then he just about as quickly condemned it as "U better go...

Re: cylinder head removal
It is a lot of doom and gloom but sometimes the game is not so bad after all. I can always stop what I am doing and drop the engine out for a "total" rebuild. What I am trying to do at this stage is to see if I can return this Corvair to its former operating condition of a month ago with a...

Re: cylinder head removal
Today I was successful in pulling off the right cylinder head in car without lowering the engine. All of the top stud nuts backed off nicely. However, all of the 3 jugs wanted to come off with the cylinder head as well. I did manage to push the 2 outside jugs back towards the block but the middle ju...

Re: LED Parking and Tail Lights
In my 1965 Corvair I put the retro LED 1157 bulbs out back in the taillights, looks good to me. The major improvement was putting the little retro LED lights in the instrument cluster, nice bright white light but not harsh, looks great. Much better than the little stock incandescent lights. I think ...

Re: cylinder head removal
Today I pulled off everything that looks like it needs to come off [in-car job] and that did expose the head nicely. Both carb studs have been removed. I removed the right-side shroud but not the big top fan shroud. I think I will leave the exhaust log on. I think I will try to remove the top stud n...

Re: cylinder head removal
I suppose it could be a burned piston. I did block off the shroud at the #5 cylinder a few months ago, I got this Corvair in March of 21. It's been a good running engine until a couple of weeks ago when it started acting as if it was running on only 5 cylinders. If I drop the head and find a burned ...

cylinder head removal
It looks like I may have a burned valve on the #5 cylinder in one of my 1965 Corvairs. 0 psi on a compression check, I pulled the valve cover in the hopes of finding a broken rocker or something, but no such luck. I did spin the engine with the remote starter switch, and it looks like normal operati...

Re: Headlight problem
I have replaced both the headlight switch and the dimmer switch and that appears to have solved the problem. Looks like the same situation as I have been having in my jeep for years. Hope it lasts.

Headlight problem
I am starting to see a weird problem in that my headlights will start to flick on and off on high beam only. I seem to be able to stop this by immediately going to low beam. They have to be on high beam for a bit for this to start happening, 15 or 20 minutes. I have a 1978 jeep Cj 5 [owned since 198...
