I have the vacuum line on the correct port but now I'm wondering if my idle speed is too high as I seem to like the idle at about 1000 RPM. I will knock the idle down and see what happens. Seems to run just fine the way it is right now.

I wanted to fix this problem quickly, so I bought a new canister from Oreilly auto. It pulls a bit of advance at idle as it's probably not correct for Corvair but I compensated for it at the distributor. Probably should get the correct one from Clarks.

An easy/excellent way to start a spark plug into a cylinder head [especially on a shrouded Corvair engine] is to cut a piece of 3/8 inch fuel to 6 inches or so and stick the end of the plug in it. Old mechanics trick that's been around for decades at least.
