I would like to see some documentation on that 66vairguy.
The head numbers are usually but not always on the ends of the heads. I've heard some of the early '60 heads were under the valve covers but I have never personally seen any.

Re: Starter question
It should sound exactly the same. The solenoid and starter motor are the same as a small block just the nose and drive are different the armature has a longer end for the drive to fit of course. I would carefully check the battery cables and connections. Since the solenoid is energized by the wire t...

Re: LM drivetrain in EM
That is a '64 and up air cleaner assembly. Check your head numbers to see what it is. On the bell housing changes - the change was between the 145 and 164 engine from '63 and prior to '64 and later and the change was a different crank seal position with the longer stroke crank. Nothing to do with th...

Re: Starter question
Not enough information. When you tested the starter out of the car were you using all the car's wiring and battery? Easiest way to check the solenoid is to jump from the S terminal to the battery terminal while it's in the car. If the solenoid is working it should crank the engine. If it does then y...

Too rich will also cause your symptom. Dirty air filters or slightly high fuel levels. Temporarily remove the air filters and see if that fixes it.

Re: LM drivetrain in EM
Your air cleaner is not the right one for a '62. All '62 models except the turbo used 2 small filters. The single filter on non turbos started in '64. Check the block and head numbers to see what you have.

Re: Fuel Pressure and Stalling
I like mechanical pumps but they do have their issues. If you go with a new pump keep your old one for parts. Some of the new ones have had issues with the base warping and the fix is to use one from an old pump. New pumps also tend to put out too much pressure so the old pump spring might be better...

Re: LM drivetrain in EM
250 at the wheels is pretty unrealistic for a Corvair unless you spend a ton of money on a turbo and run a lot of boost. Then you will have a really expensive grenade. Remember the Corvair numbers were at the crank. The 102 is a nice engine. The 3 speed is killing the fun since 1st isn't synchronize...

Re: Spark plug oddity
If you are looking them up it's called a Time-Sert. You can get the kit on eBay but it looks like that is what came out with the plug. Was the plug really hard to get out? If the insert was properly installed the plug may have been cross threaded into it but it should have been very difficult to rem...

Re: gas tank sending unit
I've swapped lots of tanks and never even thought about removing the crossmember. It isn't any issue to do with the crossmember in place. The Clark's tool is amazing. After messing around with those retainers for years I would never go back even though they aren't really that difficult. If your time...

Yes it is a 4 digit number that has to be crossed to a six digit key code.

Pick it yourself. Not too difficult with a little patience. You could also check your local club for someone with a set of tryout keys. There are only 64 of them.

Re: Miss and rough at idle
'66vairguy is right about the Pertronix. If it's the Pertronix1 then running with the stock ballast wire is the way to go even though that isn't the way they tell you to wire it. I have several wired that way and they work great. Fix that vacuum leak before messing with anything else. Check to make ...

Re: new key replacements
I would love to buy some B10 and B11 blanks. I'm looking for a good source but the lock suppliers I've talked to won't sell to me since I'm not a licensed locksmith. I've got so many Corvairs I need to be able to do them myself. I have a key duplicator and a Curtis clipper.
