Re: Painting Engine tins
I used Duplicolor DE1635 also. I spent several days cleaning a set of rusty tins with an electric drill and wire wheels before painting them. Stripping the old paint off is fairly easy with oven cleaner. Be careful and use gloves because that stuff is pretty caustic. Let the paint cure for a couple ...

Re: New lifters to install
Per the shop manual: Lubricate valve lifters and install in crankcase bore. NOTE: Whenever new valve lifters are installed, coat foot of lifter with Molykote or its equivalent. I interpret this to mean that new lifters should have the cam contact area coated with assembly lube and should then be lig...

Re: New 110 engine build for my '65 automatic
Yes I am running cruise control. It's an old Cal Custom unit that I found on eBay. It has the advantage of not requiring an axle speed sensor (though it can use one if needed). It only requires a speed sense connection to the coil like a tach. It works great on a PG car where there isn't any shiftin...

Re: My Corvair Hi Fi Stereo Install
How did you secure the amp in the frunk? I've seen a couple of similar placements that had screws going down through the top of the gas tank.

Re: Front Speaker Install
I don't know if it will help you but this is how I adapted the factory bracket for my home-made dual speaker arrangement. http://www.rament.net/corvair/speaker_bracket.jpg I haven't seen the Clark's bracket or how the back of their dual speaker is set up. Can you post a picture of the bracket and th...

Re: New 110 engine build for my '65 automatic
UPDATE The new engine is in the car and I'm loving it! The big valve 110 heads from American Flat Six have far exceeded my expectations. Throttle response is immediate with no loading or hesitation and the engine pulls hard in low. I've got the shift point up to around 40 mph and the engine still p...

Re: Dangers of making assumptions
I can relate. Assumed the previous owner had enough sense to tighten bolts and do basic maintenance... Wrong. Starter was loose and had chewed up the ring gear. Stator had ovaled out the bearing surface, transaxle had what looked like crisco in it... Ran great (until it didn't) and then it quickly t...

New 110 engine build for my '65 automatic
Over the past few months, I've been gathering parts to build a new engine for my '65 automatic. This is for a car that's been driven over 32K miles in the past 5 years so its basically a daily driver. Trips often include 8,000 to 9,000 foot elevation changes and long 8% to 12% grades that the old 11...

Re: Clarks "Econo" valve covers
I decided to pick up a set to try out too. I used flat black header paint and polished the fins like Jason did. http://www.rament.net/corvair/images/valve_covers.jpg The paint seemed to match the anodized finish on the oil pan pretty well, so I polished the fins on it to match. http://www.rament.net...

Speedometer drive is off the front wheel. Changing rears shouldn't affect the speedometer reading.

Have you had a chance to find out if they seal well yet? What kind of gaskets did you use?

Re: My new corvair. Security questions!
It's important to remember that cut-off switches and other means of disabling the ignition are only going to help if the person taking your car doesn't know anything about Corvairs. I won't go into detail because of 4carbcorvair's comment above, but lets just say that the everything that's important...
