Re: Bad spindle?
Oh, in my brief conversation with the PO, he seemed to think he was a Corvair expert. I have over $15k in receipts he gave me, most of them from Clark’s. Not that it means anything, though. The first clue was the stripped valve cover bolts, which he tried to use thread sealer and then a cork gasket ...

Re: Bad spindle?
Thanks guys. I think you are probably spot on terribleted. I keep finding things the PO did that make me go hmmm. It did have very fresh grease in it so that leads be to believe he knew what was going on. I am going to tear down the other side as well and see if anything hokey is going on there, too.

Bad spindle?
Was washing the car today and decided to shake the tires to check for slop. Pulled the front pass bearings off and found a lip on the spindle where the bearing rests. I would assume the ridge is not supposed to be there but wanted to confirm with you guys. Assuming it’s not, is there anything I can ...

Re: New design Engine Thermostats available now
Pretty cool and I probably would have given them a shot had I seen them before I ordered the original style from Clark's. I'll echo what Brad said about distributing them through well known vendors.

Re: Wheels and Tires
FYI - Datsuns have the same lug pattern as EMs. Try to enter those into your searches. You could use 68-73 Datsun 510, any year 240/260/280z and even 79-83 280zx, just to name a few. Funny enough, the wheels in the MAXXIS pics above are the same ones I ran on my 510, but they were 15s. The previous ...

Re: Ride height LM
The google machine is failing me. I've found the ride height numbers for EMs but not LMs. Can someone help a guy out? My car is a bit of a mystery to me as I bought it at auction. Thanks!

Re: Running in 40/50 degree weather without thermostat bellows?
Thanks guys. Really appreciate the advice for this newbie. I tried ordering new bellows from Clark's a month or so ago and they were out. The car ran pretty well. I still need to track down an idle issue - could be linkage, could be choke, could be vacuum. Who knows. Winter project. I don't plan on ...

Running in 40/50 degree weather without thermostat bellows?
I have been working on my Corsa Turbo since I bought it in June and haven't been able to make it to a local club meeting. Well, the car is running now and I'd like to go to the meeting tonight, but it is going to be in the low 50s / upper 40s and both thermostat bellows are shot. Would it be a bad i...

Sticky throttle...stronger return spring?? 65 Turbo
I feel like the throttle return spring might be on the weaker side because I am constantly finding myself pulling up on the gas pedal to alleviate a high idle situation. The linkage doesn't seem to be binding on anything, but it never seems to want to return to "normal" unless I use my foo...

Re: Fan hitting shroud. Was: What just happened to the turbo?
After I helicoiled the hole in the case, I walked away from the car for about a week...and forgot to break the tab at the bottom of the helicoil. Screwed in the new bolt and thought, why is this getting so hard to...SNAP. Broke the bolt. I should have stopped but for some reason I just kept wrenchin...

Re: What is the age range of Corvair Fans? (POLL)
Attended the "Corvair College" in Oregon last week and the age range was definitely skewed towards the 70+ group for sure. I'm 44 and there may have been three other guys there my age or below. That said, the ol'e boys sure know their stuff!

Re: 65 Corsa Turbo Overheating at sustained highway speeds
I had a real Oh $h!t moment yesterday when reading this thread. I've found so many shortcuts the previous owner took with my car that I was convinced it did not have the baffles. My thought was, "Great, one MORE thing I need to fix." I frantically looked through the pics I took when I had ...

Re: Fan hitting shroud. Was: What just happened to the turbo?
Ordered and received the new bearing and top cover from Clarks and started the installation this weekend. Was just about finished torquing all the bolts and...one of the holes was stripped. Pulled the bolt out and a bunch of "fix a thread" compound came with it. The PO did the same thing t...

Re: Fan hitting shroud. Was: What just happened to the turbo?
I suspect the fan bearing shaft is loose in the engine cover. If a new bearing was installed with force into the engine cover instead of heating the cover to expand the hole (and the bearing shaft will practically drop in) then the hole is broached and you'll need another cover. BTW - I seen folks ...

Re: Fan hitting shroud. Was: What just happened to the turbo?
Well, never mind on my previous question as I answered it myself, yes, you do need to take the turbo and carb off to get the shroud off. Well, here are the results. Any idea on why the fan would go up into the shroud? Bad fan bearing? IMG-8725.JPG IMG-8726.JPG IMG-8727.JPG IMG-8728.JPG IMG-8729.JPG
