Points gap versus Dwell Angle

I have a 63 Corvair with the 102 HP engine with PG and points ignition. I installed new points with a gap of 0.016". When I check the dwell angle, it is at around 25 deg and doesn't move much when throttle is given. Dwell should be around 31 to 34. If I reduce the gap, to 0.012" then the d...

Re: Hesitation under load

I replaced the electronic ignition with the points and condensor and the hesitation problem went away. I tried it on the highway once hot and no hesitation. The pertronix ignition is now safely in a box in my basement where it can do no harm.

Re: Hesitation under load

Thanks for your reply. The car was in storage since last November and I just got it out last week , thus the long delay in my posting (we have snow and salt on the roads until April up here in Montreal). I am using the 3 ohm coil an I bypassed the ballast wire. I think I will put the points and orig...

Re: Hesitation under load

I did all the tests and checked that everything is connected properly. The hesitation under hard acceleration occurs when the engine is hot. The coil is very hot to the touch, and I am wondering if this could affect the voltage output. I heard of people moving it away from the engine. Could this be ...

Adding flexible hose to reduce vibration on oil pressure line

I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge under the dash in my 63 Monza Coupe (102 HP engine) by running Ni-Cu 1/4" tubing from the oil pressure switch (on filter housing) to the gauge. It has been working great but I am worried with time, that the tubing will fatigue and crack due to engine ...

1963 Monza coupe rear wheel bearing service

I have 63 coupe with 42000 miles. I want to grease the rear wheel bearings. I saw some posts on drilling a hole in the cast bearing housing and installing a zerk fitting. I also saw in "Keeping your Corvair Alive" to drill a 0.063" hole and putting in a screw. Should I do one of these...

Re: Hesitation under load: Solved!!!

You guys were right that it was an ignition problem. When I installed the Pertronix and new coil last year, I had run a jumper wire to bypass the ballast wire (but keeping it connected) thinking that the current would all go to the jumper wire and I would get full power to the coil. Current takes th...

Re: Hesitation under load

I don't have any detonation or pinging sounds under hard acceleration. I will look into the vacuum leak idea and see if the distributor is advancing under acceleration.

Re: Hesitation under load

The hesitation continues during the the hard acceleration until I let off the gas. The more I open the throttle, the more it hesitates.

I'll try putting back the points and stock GM coil and re-attach the resistance wire and see what happens.

Re: Hesitation under load

I installed the following parts: Coil: Pertronix 40511 3 ohm coil ( I then bypassed the ballast wire) Electronic Ignition: Pertronix 1162A Wires: MSD part no 31193 (50 ohm per ft resistance) It worked great for a few hundred miles. Why would it start hesitating now? From what I read above, I install...

Hesitation under load

I have a 1963 Monza coupe with Powerglide and 102 hp engine. I changed to electronic ignition (Pertronix) and a 40,000 volt coil with low resistance ignition wires. All was running fine until today when the car hesitates under hard acceleration. It happens at low speeds or highway speeds but only un...

Loose carb linkages on 63 Corvair

I have a 63 Corvair with PG and the 102 HP engine. I have even compression on all 6 cyl at around 140psi. The engine runs fine except when I stop and slowly accelerate from a stop sign for example. There is a rumble like I am running on 3 cyl. When I move the accelerator rod with my hand I can see t...

Re: 1963 Corvair Engine detonation

Thanks Terribleted. I think I was unscrewing the rocker nut too quickly until I got lots of clatter. Then I turned it down until clatter stopped, and then added the pre-load. I understand it better now. So I will try your method. I am curious to see how this goes.

Re: 1963 Corvair Engine detonation

The blocked idle circuit is something I never checked. I rebuilt both carbs so nothing should be blocked, but anything is possible. If I were to screw in the idle mixture screw all the way, and see if there is a change. If no change then maybe it is blocked. If there is a change, then it should be f...

Re: 1963 Corvair Engine detonation

I have been re-adjusting the lifters several times but I don't really have a feel for it. I loosen the rocker nut until it clatters and then some. Then I tighten it slowly until the clatter stops. Then I tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn. When I turned to 1/2 turn, it made the engine run worse. I don't know i...
