Re: Window Crank Handle Install

Thanks for the responses and insight. The handle isn't new. I'm not sure if the clip has enough integrity to hold onto the shaft, or if the insulation I added is too thick for me to push on the handle. I'll take off the panel and insulation to better understand the issue.

Window Crank Handle Install

I replaced the rear seat panels in my '65 convertible. What's the trick to reinstalling the window handle? I've inserted the clip in the handle, and expected to just pop on the handle. I added a sheet of insulation to the inside of the panel. Is this keeping the handle from going deep enough on the ...

Re: New to Corvairs in OR.

Great looking! How does it run? I just recently put 15” Torque Thrusts on my ‘65. I’m a fan of white stripes and the stock wheel covers. Mine, however, the simulated wire type, were noisy. And the tires were too big. Keeps us all updated on your progress. Sent from my iPhone using Corvair Forum mobi...

Re: Mystery wire wheels

I bought a set of 14” ones on eBay. Just have to be patient and willing to take them apart to clean and paint them if they’re rough.

Re: Firing miss

I’ll try the plug wires and compression testing. Thanks Brad.

Firing miss

My 180 turbo was running great until recently, when sounded like it fouled a plug. I inspected and replaced all the plugs; the ones I removed looked fine. Runs the same, like it's got a fouled plug. What should be my next step? The exhaust looks and smells like it's running rich. Plug wires and igni...

Re: Rear wheel noise

The wheel might be flexing a lot. Cracks in the wheel? If the different cover makes noise on the same wheel then it is a problem with the wheel. To close the loop on this...... After replacing the unjoints and checking the wheel bearings I found the noise still there. I removed the wheel covers and...

Re: Rear wheel noise

Thanks Ted. I’m going to put it on another wheel and go from there.

Re: Rear wheel noise

I installed new u-joints and found the noise in question still there. Upon further inspection I’ve discovered it’s the wheel cover. These are the stock-looking wire caps with the spinner, but 14” to accommodate the larger wheels. I’ve tightened all the bolts on the cover, to no avail. The spokes, sp...

Re: Rear wheel noise

Thanks for all your help on this. I pulled axle. One of the u-joint bearing cups on the inboard and one on the outboard came apart - the outer shell just fell off, and pieces of bearing scattered across the floor. These are the bearings that sit between the yoke and the retaining strap. The other tw...

Re: Rear wheel noise

Thanks Ted! As I listed to the brake rub, when the wheel assembly lifted off the ground and by spinning the tire, the rubbing sound (again, very different from what I hear when driving after a mile or so), is not constant - like the drum is out of round. Brakes look good and work well, but I suppose...

Rear wheel noise

After driving for about a mile I'm getting a scraping metal scraping sound coming from the right-rear wheel on my '65. The sound doesn't change when braking. After driving I can't seem to replicate the sound when the I lift the car and spin the wheel. The brakes rub slightly but don't make much nois...

Re: Sourcing 14" Steel Wheels

If you’re on the west coast try stockwheels.com. I got a set of refurbished 14x6 to use with Hankook Optimo whitewalls and stock (from a Chevelle) wire wheel covers.

Re: LM Front Spindle Install

Thanks. Ball joints are brand new. The lower ones were a real pain to press in. Both sides equally difficult. I suppose I could have damaged the one that isn’t letting the spindle turn easily. It looks fine though.
