Re: New Approach to Corvair Turbocharging

Looking at all the porosity showing in the compressor housing, I'd suspect that the turbo came from off shore as well. The interesting thing to me is, only a few turbochargers were built as draw throughs, and I don't believe I've even heard of a T/3/T4 unit with the seals needed for such an applicat...

Re: Turbo with NOS ?????

I have some experience with Nitrous. I blew up a bbc on the dyno when first testing it, because of lack of fuel pressure. Pressure was fine with the baseline run, and we had 540HP @ 6000rpm. Installed the nitrous and made a run. An instant before the dyno room filled with smoke, someone saw the fuel...

Re: The Spousal Avoidance Unit build

I don't know how you mounted your fuel cell, but I like the front radiator position. It works well on my car. I don't even have the front facia cut up, using a bottom breather system. It was a little short of cooling in over 100 degree days, but now I'm out on the coast and it works just fine. The m...

Re: Pertronix Second Strike

On a big cammed, multi carbed engine with a single plane manifold as you might find in a 11-12sec V8 car, a multispark ignition has it's place. The cam creates low vacumm, the carbs don't mix well, and a single plane mani has poor distribution at low rpm. Hence, the idle we so enjoy. A large portion...

Re: 4 Barrel setup stumbles in 3rd and 4th.

If an engine runs good at full throttle in 1st and 2nd, and then starts missing in 3rd or 4th, I'd look at full delivery. Electrical generally is RPM related and should rear it's head in all gears. When it lays down and surges only in the upper gears, the float bowl is running dry, leaning it out. Y...

Re: Toro Corvair Project Thread azdave

Looking good, Dave. Very clean and well thought out. The distributor in mine hits too, and I've had to spend the extra time getting it to drop in right. Are you going to, or are you, using a Pertronics?
Again, nice work!

Re: Paxton or Vortech superchargers

In the mid '60s I ended up with a bunch of stuff including a 2 barrel manifold for the Corvair, a Paxton blower with brackets, a two piece carb incloser, and a two barrel carb. I had it sitting around for a while and a friend asked to see if he could fit it on a 62 V8 (215) Tempest. I don't think he...

Toro conversions have room for a back seat in the original location, check sig, go to album or go to Corvair of the Month, October.

Re: OLDS 455 TORO CORVAIR

Dave is correct about the intake. The Cad will fit with the stock Eldo intake, but neither the Olds or Cad can use aftermarket. There is a rather expensive "Olds" copy in alloy. There are alloy heads for both that would bring the engine weight down 30-40lbs on both engines. Weight of the C...

Re: Engine shipping

With things I've shipped and had shipped, prices varied greatly with different carriers. They go by weight, footprint and height. If you have something that cant have anything stacked on top of it, some carriers will penalize for that. If it isn't on a pallet of some kind, then it'll be harder for t...

Fuel Sender

My car had sat for about 25 years. When I put fuel in it, the gauge didn't respond, read empty. So I cleaned up everything leading into the sender, including ground, and it worked for about 2 years and then went full onreading beyound full.
So my question is: Ground, power, or sender?

Re: O.K. I feel defeated now!

I rebuilt my first carb more than 50 years ago, and have done my own ever since. I've ended up with, or have worked on the carbs of others, and have had similar problems from an assortment of areas. Seat not tightened. Gasket not installed when new seat was screwed in. Mixed needles/seats where seat...

Re: Subaru Engine Swap in an Early Model Vair

First, I'll not be one to say to leave it alone. Just one look at my sig should dispell that. You've got a few contradictory goals set. You want reliable. There is nothing unreliable about the Corvair engine. In the '60s, cars weren't kept very long. Each time they changed hands the price dropped a ...

Re: Corvair of the Month October 2010

Thanks for the nice words, and the votes. Our Corvair was built over a period of 10+ years, and friends were involved over those years, both in time, and the encouragement for it's completion. It's a great driver, and we enjoy it big time. I'm glad you like it. I especially want to thank Scott for t...
