Re: 102hp distributor

When you say "not in the best shape" not sure what the issue is. The distributors are very basic IF the correct parts are in them. Usually replacing the shaft bushing in the housing takes care of wobble and timing/dwell variation. DO NOT DO THE DOUBLE BUSHING CONVERSION unless you have a ...

102hp distributor

My distributor on my 102hp engine isn’t in top shape. It’s number 1110296 (1963 super turbo air)) which is the correct one? i do have a renovated 1110297 (1963 monza PG) that i was thinking of putting into my 102hp instead. Can i do this or will i have to swap bits over from 296 to 297? Thanks for a...

Re: Pushrod squirting oil

He was actually commenting about the top hose outlet for the fresh air feed needing to be blocked off or working properly (valve in heater box closing and hose in place and not torn). If you are not running any heater hoses, blocking the outlets in your photo is also a good idea so that the airflow...

Re: Pushrod squirting oil

Fact is most of the dropped seats are traced to the larger valve 140HP heads. The other engines with the smaller valves don't seem to be an issue until approaching 100K miles or if the engine is badly overheated due to a broken fan belt and the driver kept going. The #5 cylinder seat issue is usual...

Re: 102hp engine

Brad made some good points. Yes the 64 fan was magnesium that fit the "smaller" bearing and was a one year only fan. In 65 the top cover was revised for a bigger (more durable) bearing. The 65-69 fans that fit the larger bearing are common. Some folks with EM engines change the top cover ...

Re: Pushrod squirting oil

Keeping the oil from getting too hot as a reason for less oil flow to the heads is not a good design parameter for anyone that uses good oil and maintains their cooling system. If you use an oil that can handle the extra heat such as a modern synthetic which wasn't available to them back then more ...

Re: 102hp engine

The 102 hp engine, in many ways, is in the same reliability/workhorse category as the 110 hp engine that was introduced in 1964. The early engine has a 145 CI displacement, while the displacement of the 110 hp engine was increased with a longer stroke crankshaft to 164 CID. The 110 hp engine was fi...

102hp engine

Is the 102hp engine a total ‘disaster’ as a Greenbrier engine? I’ve read a few things about the 102hp being not so good at lugging a full load in a Greenbrier or Rampside. But if I’m not planning on lugging stuff around in my FC, could this 102hp engine be usable/suitable? 1961 Greenbrier, 1962 Ramp...

Re: Pushrod squirting oil

Well it turns out "more is good" isn't that good. There are several things that cause variation in oil flow up the pushrod. The lifters make a difference. Did you inspect your pushrods to make sure they were not plugged? Also GM made two different pushrods!! Bob Helt, who does a lot of Co...

Re: Pushrod squirting oil

I had the exact same problem when I first fired up my rebuilt Corsa turbo. I was told that high engine RPM can increase the oil flow up the pushrods. I was running about 1500 RPM at the time and had oil squirting out over the top of my cutoff valve covers. I was using new lifters from Clark’s. Exce...

Pushrod squirting oil

Hi there, bench started my 102hp engine yesterday. Before i started it up i double checked cold valve lash adjustments... followed Dave Motorhead’s video on how to cold adjust. Eventually it started :) i had my 1/3 valve covers on each side and noticed that on one side a couple of pushrods were squi...

Re: Front Door Adjustments

If it’s the same problem i had... the door just wouldn’t shut and stay shut. They seemed to have a life of there own. I adjusted the door strikers, in and then out, then up and then down... fixed it but after a few minutes or days or weeks they decided not to stay closed any more. Bought some new d...

Re: Push rod .050 hole location

There is a small hole in the side of each push rod that is there to spray oil on the rocker arm to lubricate it . The push rods rotate during engine operation, so the oil is sprayed in all directions (something like a rotating lawn sprinkler). The shop manual refers to the side hole position, stati...

Re: Push rod .050 hole location

The rod will rotate during use so it doesn't matter. What they mean is that the little side hole in the rod must be towards the head (so it oils the rockers) so don't flip it around and put the end with the hole into the engine towards the lifters. Whoever wrote that long ago probably was used to b...
