Re: Gear box/transmission

OK, I know no that these are just casting numbers... learning all the time :-) So I can be more specific (I think)... I have a transmission with this stamped on it... IMG_2729.JPG R0I23 Which means (I think) R = Saginaw, MI 4-speed manual - January 23rd I believe it's not possible to know the year? ...

Re: Gear box/transmission

The parts for 3-4 speed differentials interchange if both are 61-64. Just the outer case is different for 64 provision for the spring perch in the car. The ONLY difference is the input shaft seal is different for 64 (Larger Shaft in transmission that passes through) and possibly the speedo gear if ...

Re: Gear box/transmission

I'm no EM expert, there is a forum for covanatics the covers all the FC's. See http://www.corvair.org/chapters/corvanatics/ They also have a Facebook page, but as they say --- Facebookevil - LOL. If you found rust in the diffy, then that's a sign it sat a long time, or maybe someone bought a used u...

Gear box/transmission

This is a little complicated and difficult to explain... hope you get what I ‘m trying to ask. To start off, I’ve taken out my engine and tranny from my 1961 Greenbrier as I’m swapping my 80hp engine to a 102hp. IMG_2718.JPG I think my Greenbrier is a bit of a mix of Corvair’s. When I got it out I n...

Re: Fuse box

I don't have a 60 shop manual handy, but I think the open fuse slot (Heat Blow) was for the gasoline heater std only on the 1960 model and optional after that. You would install a lower clip with a plug-on blade terminal to use that slot. I've been told it was also used for the optional 4-way flash...

Re: Starter nose cones break!

PRESSURE PLATES Bad or warped ring gears often break the starter housing. The pressure plate spring (diaphragm) fatigues with use and heat. Also check the ends of the fingers for wear as well as the clutch contact surface. The large ring gear is welded at several points to the pressure plate or tor...

Re: Fuse box

Well, I don't know if you're interested in just replacing the old fuse box but if so here is some info. One of our forum members, Craig Nicol, sells replacement fuse boxes for Corvairs. You can check out this link http://www.corvairforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=13427&p=92721&hili...

Re: Fuse box

Looks like your basic crusty old Corvair fuse box. That first slot on the left NEVER had a fuse. The labels are confusing but you'll see a little mark at the top and that is an arrow indicating the name goes to the fuse to the right of the label. Based on a 65 Corvair, and I think the 64 was the sa...

Fuse box

Hi there, new problem. I have no power to my Heat Blower, not to strange as there is no fuse and is missing one fuse clip... IMG_2361.JPG They’re all pretty rusty so I bought some replacement clips from clarks. I can’t get these clips in, and I’m pretty sure they are too big/wide. IMG_2568.JPG The p...

Re: 102hp distributor

There is a discrepancy in the listed distributor specifications between the above distributor chart that I posted earlier and the specifications that are provided in the attached 1963 Chevrolet Corvair GM Heritage Center Specs . The Corvair engine compression ratio and camshaft specifications are i...

Re: 102hp distributor

I think I’ve opened a can of worms... I’ve been checking out tech pages and seeing what the parts number are for different distributors... now I’m much more informed but not that much wiser ;) Cams have a parts number and have a stamped number on them that has no reference to that number. For exampl...

Re: 102hp distributor

Been checking out Clarks for distributor parts. As far as i can tell it’s 3 parts that are different... the cam, the weights and the springs. Have I missed out on anything? I’ve been trying to find a parts number list for the distributor. As you can see in the above picture my 296 distributor weight...

P.S. the 102hp will go into a Corvair that has a 4 speed gear box not one with a PG
