Re: 3spd. To 4 spd swap
As you are intent on swapping the transmission in any event, may I ask if swapping in a five (5) speed transmission would be a reasonable alternative? For those with experience; would the labor, or cost of labor for the five speed swap be similar to the four speed? Also does the five speed trans cos...

Some pics of the '63 as it arrived in CA.
Of course its going to need more attention than expected. That was, well, expected.

Re: Dolly towing a Corvair
Also when I worked for a junk yard when we towed a car backwards that didn't have a locking steering wheel we would loop a bungee strap around the wheel and then close the ends outside the drivers door after you pull them tight. It would help keep the wheel from wobbling because you are working aga...

Dolly towing a Corvair
It turns out that towing a Corvair with a car dolly works out OK. It was a little interesting getting the oil pan to clear the dolly center section. Looks a bit odd towing it backwards but eh. So make sure you check the front wheels as they may not be tight. Ask how I know. Also airing up the front ...

Nice looking car.
Lots of light colors on the earlier. That dark color looks really good.
I'm new myself, but welcome.

Re: 1964 four door automatic project by remote
That Sprint must have been quite a dog, only 18.4 in a 1/4 mile. I had an 18.2 in my 62 102 HP without a posi read end. Agreed. Going to get the suspension sorted out and will run the thing till it forces a rebuild. But yea, a 3.3l at rebuild time sounds right. Adds about 50 ft lbs just where its n...

Re: TRANSMAXX 3292801 Reprogramming Kit for powerglide?
that kit is for the *big car* pg trans & wont fit a vair pg trans. -Scott V. I bought a modulator and a filter listed specifically for my '64 900 from Rock Auto. Apparently both parts are for 'big' car PGs and neither part will work on my '64 Corvair PG. Typical shift kits for US auto transmiss...

Re: 1964 four door automatic project by remote
Agreed. I've mentioned a few times that the softer springs, especially for a street car, are preferable. If an aftermarket front anti-roll bar is added there has to be an increase in rear roll resistance to limit understeer. If a rear bar isn't possible, not sure it will fit with the transverse spri...

Re: 1964 four door automatic project by remote
Computer aided handling assist is a fairly recent thing. Skid pad numbers jumped in the mid eighties in part because car companies focused more on spreading the load among all four tires with, among other things, devices like bigger front and rear sway bars. Tires were getting much better too. While...

Re: 1964 four door automatic project by remote
Eklund - here's an interesting post on Corvair handling see - http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/read.php?1,919720 Some cars with certain setups lift one wheel or the other in some corners. It may be unavoidable but it is not preferred. The notion that body lean is OK as it is a sign of 'good' weight ...

Re: 1964 four door automatic project by remote
O.K. then you know how to move the battery, that's good, not a project for a novice. The "one wire" alternator is nothing more than the standard 10si unit with a "kludged" circuit board. The internally regulated 10SI has three connections 1. Output to the battery and car system....

Re: 1964 four door automatic project by remote
Ecklund - I have to agree with Swngaxl that moving the battery is a major effort and cost for a minor gain - I'm an electrical guy and I did it for fun and eventually you can attempt it. You have a lot of other stuff to do. Just move the spare to the front for now. Yes folks put the A/C condenser u...

Re: 1964 four door automatic project by remote
Yeah, the better answer would be to remove weight from an area, instead of moving it around, to get a desired effect. But as I have to have a battery and like to have a spare, to the front they go. Again, just my 2 cents worth, but I would recommend keeping the battery in the back for a while, and ...
