Re: 1963 Corvair fold down seat operation help needed

Here is a link to some photos of what I have:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/TYMxmjyseqgJFUf36

It is out of a63' spyder coupe.

What I have doesn't look like what is pictured in the manual link above. It is very hard to unlatch with a screwdriver.

1963 Corvair fold down seat operation help needed

Does the fold down rear seat back in a 63 coupe need to be manually unlocked to go up and down or do you just force it? I could not get mine to operate so I took it apart to clean, touch up paint, and lube. Both latches work ok and are not damaged as far as I can tell, but I don't see how they would...

Re: Fuel gauge sending unit calebration

I have a 63. I ended up taking the gauge out and it fell apart when it was removed. There was a broken rivet and the wires also broke when it came apart. Drilled out the rivet and replaced that and resoldered the wires for E and F. Works as it should now. Bench tested F and E both worked! My guess i...

Re: Fuel gauge sending unit calebration

Here is what I found on bench testing:

2 12 v Plus to one terminal..cannot tell you which one...

Re: Fuel gauge sending unit calebration

Thank for the tips. I disconnected the sending unit and connected the sender wire the the ground strap in the engine bay with a long wire to get a good ground. When I turned the key off and on the fuel gauge was not consistent. 7 times out of 10 it read 1/4 tank, once it read empty and twice it read...

Re: Instrument cluster lighting

You can take the headlight switch out and take it apart to clean it. You just have to bend some tabs on the housing to get it apart. If that doesn't work you can get a replacement. Or you can just skip right to replacing it. If you have intermittent lights and rotating the dimmer effects them workin...

Fuel gauge sending unit calebration

This is for a car I am bringing back from the dead so I don't have any experience with it working properly. I put in a new fuel tank and sending unit. I have the sending unit out of the tank and even if I bypass the stop and have the arm touch the sock the fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank. When resting on ...

Re: 1960 gas heater install in a 63

Thanks guys! Definitely a '63. Maybe a late 63? Has all the 63 trim and no leaf spring in back. There was a knock out for the round hole for the combustion blower so I'm good there. If it is in fact supposed to be a D shape cutout at the heater I can trace the shroud and make that cut. I'm curious w...

1960 gas heater install in a 63

I have a gas heater from a 60 I am installing in a 63. From the manual it looks like fresh air intake is supposed to come from the passenger side fender area. Does it need to be the size of the housing flange which is sort of a D shape or can I just do a 2" or 3" hole? At the bottom of the...

Re: 1963 coupe axle rubbing arm

Success! For a while anyway. I drilled 2" holes from the inside per the manual and found the welded nut recess. It's a little cage welded to the frame that holds the nut but allows it to move a bit. Both of the front nuts could not get the minimum torque without slipping so I opened up both sid...

Re: 1963 coupe axle rubbing arm

Thanks for the thoughts. I looked it up this morning and to my delight section 10 of the 61 manual details what to do. I can drill and tap for a 7/16 helicoil, or drill a 2" hole on the inside to get access to replace the welded nut. I don't know what a welded nut is but I guess I will find out...

Re: 1963 coupe axle rubbing arm

Thanks for the replies. The driver side subframe mount that goes at an angle seems like it won't get tight and the bolt pops when tightening. It's like the captured nut is partially stripped. How would you guys fix that? Helicoil? Drill out and tap larger? The bolt doesn't fall out but it won't torq...

Re: 1963 coupe axle rubbing arm

Update: I replaced the trans and engine mounts with new. I torqued them 70% less than spec because I used antisieze and read you should reduce the torque because the fasteners are lubricated. Drove around the block gingerly and all was good. Drove around aggressively and the axles rubbed again. Look...

Re: 1963 coupe axle rubbing arm

Threads left? From the picture it looks like the powertrain is too far forward. Check the toe. I'll bet it has severe tow out. If it does fixing that will pull the axles away from the control arms. I don't recall ever having one rub in that location. You just opened up a whole new world to me. I'll...
