Pate Swap Meet - 2018

Anyone going to the Pate Swap Meet in Fort Worth this year? One of the biggest meets in the south... hoping to find some Corvair goodies.

Re: Blower Bearing or Idler Pulley Bearing? NEITHER!

Decided to bite the bullet and do it right. Ordered a harmonic balancer and correct 1964 motor mount bracket from Clarks $$$. I've heard that a proper engine should have a HB instead of cast pulley anyway. The setup is a 65 110hp w/ PG inside a 64 car. Not sure why it had the cast pulley to begin wi...

Re: Blower Bearing or Idler Pulley Bearing?

So turns out it is neither the fan nor the idler pulley... it's the crank pulley. When I rebuilt the engine I put in three bolts to the crank pulley; the main 3/4" bolt and two shorter smaller bolts on either side. It looks like one of the small bolts backed out while I was driving and now the ...

Blower Bearing or Idler Pulley Bearing? NEITHER!

Took the 64 for a short drive yesterday and while idling at a red light I heard a horrible knocking/rattling/clattering coming from the engine compartment. Pulled over and popped the hood fearing that it was rod knocking or something sinister. Sounded like it was external to the block because of the...

Smoke after long drive / Fumes in cabin

I believe I have an oil leak somewhere under the turkey roaster, but not 100% certain. Here is what I am seeing; any input is appreciated! Rebuilt 110hp with PG. This weekend I got the dwell angle to 31 degrees, timing set to spec, carbs tuned to the best of ability. Took the car out for a 10 minute...

Re: Memoirs of a Monza

Quick question - My ignition switch only operates in the OFF - ON - START positions. It will not turn to the LOCK position no matter how hard I try. The key comes out easily when in the OFF position, and the actual ignition switch works just fine. I'm wondering if pulling the key out and leaving the...

Re: Generator Options

Fellas - Thanks so much for the help. A few comments: 1. Thanks Jerry. So, the armature is bad not because of wiring, but because the threads are pulled off of the pulley end. Went in to replace the bearing and ended up pulling all the threads off of the stud trying to get the pulley nut off.... bad...

Generator Options

Pulled the generator off the 1964 Monza this past weekend. I've got a bad armature and the insulation on the field coils is shot to pieces. I have two options: rebuild from California Corvair ($210) or buying the parts from Clarks and rebuilding myself ($160). Which should I do and why? Not really i...

Engine Tuning - Order of Operations

From what I understand, there are several different items to check and adjust in order for your engine to run at its best: 1. Setting the point gap (measuring with dwell meter) 2. Setting the timing by turning the distributor (check with timing light) 3. Adjusting the carb air/fuel mix 4. Setting th...

Re: Memoirs of a Monza

Alright, gonna keep working on this project. Interest comes in waves, but I believe that is normal for most professional weekend tinkerers. The Monza cranks and runs, having some issues with reverse but I believe a manual valve adjustment is going to clear these up. The carbs need to be tuned and sy...

Re: No Reverse... Help!

I've ordered the tool for manual valve adjustment from Clarks, so I've got some time to kill before it arrives. While waiting I'll disconnect the vacuum line as you have mentioned and see what it does.

What exactly does that tell me? What should I be looking for when this is disconnected?

Re: No Reverse... Help!

Fluid is at the correct level when at operating temperature. That was my first guess as well.

Looks like I'll be ordering the special manual valve tool from Clarks. Anybody got one I can borrow?? haha

Re: No Reverse... Help!

Alright, just got in from a test drive. Pulled the cable again and did a proper TV lever alignment, so now I have reverse. However, it is an odd type of reverse. Two strange symptoms. 1. Reverse only kicks in after about 4 seconds. So I shift from N to R, and then after a moment or so the engine kic...
