Re: How does my idle sound?

Hi Bill, believe me, the carbs on these things and the linkages in between are critical and can behave in strange ways if not adjusted or breathing correctly. Corvair engines are very capable of running on one carb and as a result one bank of cylinders without sounding horribly rough. A mixture of a...

Re: How does my idle sound?

Hi there, Two things worth checking. 1. The fact that the idle screw is not touching and effect the cam could be due to the linkage being out of whack. As I said eatlier, this is an absolute and critical must for proper operation. 2. Sounds like you have air leaking from the carb that has little suc...

Re: Isky High Lift Cam

No, not looking at changing the cam. I was just wanting to know exactly what I have, and the likely impact on performance. Good and bad.

Standard heads without any modifications.

Cheers & thanks

Re: Shipped car to Utah from Virginia and now runs terrible

When I was attempting to diagnose the poor running of my engine, I was surprised how important the carb linkage settings are with respect to how your engine performs. It is possible that your linkage was inadvertently altered during no the transit to your new home. I would start there, as it will ef...

Re: Isky High Lift Cam

Thanks for the attached. Does a hot cam have an effect on fuel efficiency and/or advanced timing? It appears from your attachment that it is plausible that this cam was ground as a one-off. Is it likely that the No.477 relates to the valve lift? I am assuming that a .477 lift would fall into the “co...

Re: Isky High Lift Cam

Hi there and thanks for your reply and interest. I really appreciate it. Since I rebuilt the engine almost two years ago, I have had difficulty in getting it to perform as I hoped it would. Lots of hours, advice from you guys and two rebuilt carbs have got me to the current point where the car runs ...

Re: How does my idle sound?

Hi there from New Zealand. Your engine sounds exactly like mine did when I first got it running after many years. I have found air cooled engines including Corvairs to be a little rattly. However yours, and mine at the time does have a little lifter noise (rattle) that will generally be fixed up wit...

Re: Isky High Lift Cam

Thanks for the attached. I’m sorry, but I don’t understand how this information helps me with my question. As I said earlier, there is no mention of a No477 grind? Is there such a thing.

Re: Isky High Lift Cam

I haven’t had a chance to speak with him yet. Maybe after lockdown. Is it usual to have a special grind done for a Corvair motor??

I can’t find any reference to a No477 going anywhere??

Isky High Lift Cam

Hi all from locked-down New Zealand My ‘62 Spyder (non-Turbo) is fitted with a ‘high lift Isky hydraulic grind No 477 can shaft. Has anyone ever heard of such a grind. I can find no reference to it on the net?? The description was provided to me by a local engine rebuilder who cleaned and measured t...

Re: Carburetor Issues

Hi there, I have now discovered via a local engine rebuilder that cleaned and measured my engine before assembly that the fitted cam shaft is actually an Isky high lift hydraulic grind No477. I’m not sure if the cam is stamped with No477 or they measured the lobes. Does this ring any bells with resp...

No they are slightly open. Given that to get the engine to idle, the idle screws are nearly all the way in. Cheers SeamusNZ

Re: Carburetor Issues

Hi all from NZ. I now have the second refurbished carb from Clarks. Unfortunately not great. Symptoms are as follows:- Starts and runs well on the chokes. Once the chokes have opened and the choke step has cleared the throttle, the engine dies. Will not run unless the idle screws are right in, and a...

Re: Carburetor Issues

I have put a vacuum gauge on both carbs, but the gauge is all over the place. I understand that this is reflective of the Otto performance cam. I will certainly check for vacuum leaks and go back to scratch with respect to the carb set-up. Cheers SeamusNZ Sent from my iPhone using Corvair Forum mobi...

As an aside, what is the best way, in your opinion to find and identify vacuum leaks. Cheers SeamusNZ
