will motor run outside of a car?

Is there a way to start a complete Corvair motor that is not in a car, but on a bench? I dont know if this is possible - with no starter to engage the fly wheel, not sure how this could work but someone told me they thought it "might" be possible..?

mystery engine with a mystery code

hi - Im in discussion with a guy in Rhode Island who has a complete, non seized Corvair motor in his place of work: a junkyard. Apparently the motor has been stored inside for a number of years in a dry building. He wants $200 for it - knows zero about the engine. Where it came from, what car it was...

Re: Cylinder bore size ?

If you are re-using old cylinders then it's best to overbore/hone them and buy new pistons and rings to fit. Going 0.020" over is going to make little difference in engine size. If you are buying all new parts then pick a size that is the best price. What ever you do - NEVER ASSUME THE CYLINDE...

Re: Help desperately needed..

Hi all, Just to wrap this email thread up - the "mystery knocking sound" that had three mechanic/machinists utterly baffled as to what was causing it, has been resolved. The replacement of one cylinder jug, that should have been standard bore like all the other cylinders (but this one was ...

Re: advice - how far do I take this?

Thank you all for your great responses. I did start a new thread as mentioned and think I may have resolved the problem where my machinist mechanic failed to do so - in fact it seems he cut some pretty important corners when he put this motor back together that caused months of wasted downtime and t...

Re: Rafee Corvair Specialist

I heard this guy Rafee at Corvair1 was really good at carb rebuilding. I would like to ship my carbs to him for rebuild (he sent me a quote) - for the life of me I cannot locate a shipping address on his website! Does anyone know where in America he is located?

Re: Help desperately needed..

Ted - yes you called it! I just didn't think that was the case. I assumed the machinist had measured everything!!! Isnt that what they are supposed to do?? I completely agree with both of what you said (Brad/Ted)! Being I was just the customer in the beginning of this "misadventure", I was...

Re: Help desperately needed..

Gentlemen, Thank you all for your responses - I learned a lot about Corvair motors the past few months. But I want to share with you some good news finally! I think I found the problem. Took the right side cylinder head to my machine shop. I was certain the knocking sound was in there somewhere. I a...

Re: Help desperately needed..

Brad/Ted/66Vairguy - thank you very much for this HUGE response!! I have actually swapped out the lifters TWICE with new lifters each time: same issue (with the #5 cylinder and torquing the valves). It seems to make sense that the issue is in the head. I just took the cylinder heads to the machinist...

Re: Help desperately needed..

Jeff - hot valve adjust - do you mean while engine is running? If that is what you mean, than yes. Interestingly when the valves are adjusted this way, when you torque down on the valves in the #5 cylinder, the tap goes away for 5 seconds, then comes back. Torque it some more, and noise goes away th...

Re: Help desperately needed..

Thank you for all your responses, I much appreciate what you all have said and recommended. This is no April Fools hoax, but probably more the result of me hiring inept mechanics who mean well, but just do not have the proper experience or the understanding of a Corvair motor. I am not looking to wa...
