Help desperately needed..
I will keep this brief, as there is a lot of detail here and this saga has been going on for so long now.... I have a 65 Monza 110 PG, 4 door. I bought the car a year ago with a knocking sound in the 5th cylinder. Took motor out and found a spun bearing and a bad rod in that 5th cylinder. So I went ...

Re: advice - how far do I take this?
Thank you for your responses. I believe cam was installed correctly but this new mechanic who jumped in recently and said distributor was bad - now thinks cam is bad and yes I do have brand new lifters in there on a used cam. I found out this is a no - no. New lifters should be put in w a new cam. A...

Re: Please Help! 63 Turbo just won't run!
Somehow after rereading this I didn't catch the fact you may have replaced your fuel tank - so I assume everything is good there! My bad.

Re: Please Help! 63 Turbo just won't run!
If it's an ignition issue (weak spark) maybe your distributor is bad? If it's a fuel issue- did you check to see if you have particles in the gas tank that need to be cleaned out? That bad stuff could be getting sucked into your fuel system and intermittently cause it to not start or stall or run li...

Re: 140 Motor Progress
Hi - is there any truth in the recommendation of replacing your camshaft if you are replacing your lifters during a rebuild?

advice - how far do I take this?
Hi all, I posted here months ago about my 65 Monza 110 hp. Bought car for $500. It had a loud knock (cylinder #5) in the engine when I got it. I had a machinist/mechanic who is excellent at his craft, rebuild the motor. He found that one of the bearings spun and the Piston arm was damaged. New pisto...

Newish Member - Just arriving late
Hello all - my name is Bill Moore. I owned 3 Corvairs back in the mid 1980s - a 67 Monza coupe, a 66 Corsa convertible and a 65 Monza convertible. The 67 was my everyday car for 2 years. Ran great, no oil leaks, never broke down. Needed body work, but I loved it as it was. Ended up selling it as I n...

Thank you PaulR - I will try the headlight removal idea. That sounds like it should work. I will keep you posted! - Bill

How can I get the trunk open on my 65 Monza?
I recently purchased a 65 Monza 4DR. Car needs nearly everything. Motor rebuilt and running (took quite awhile) finally. I am now assessing the rest of the vehicle. I need so much, Im a bit stressed about it. I need: OUTSIDE: car needs all new stainless (both front and back windshield trim, the trim...

What are the best tires to put on 14" Rally rims?
I have a 65 Monza 4DR with 13" stock wheels. I recently got a good deal on a set of Chevy/GM 14 x 7 rally rims w caps and trim rings. They are used (came off a 1969 Camaro) but in beautiful shape. What are the best tires (brand, size) for this application? I'm open to all suggestions (low profi...

Re: Is it the connecting rod or the crank?
The manual rod end play specification is 0.005 - 0.010" so the other rods @ 0.008" is acceptable and the # 5 at 0.020" is NOT. I'm a bit baffled that you seem convinced the crankshaft must be good. The kind of crankshaft repair you originally described is NOT something I would do con...

Re: Is it the connecting rod or the crank?
Here is the update as of 9/23: right/passenger side of motor was taken apart - head, cylinders, pistons, rods. That is the #5, #3 and #1 cylinders. We inspected everything: bearings, crank journals, the pistons, checked for inconsistent wear. Compared ALL measurements and clearances of all bearings ...

Re: Is it the connecting rod or the crank?
How much trouble would it be to swap rods with another cylinder? That would let you know for sure if the knocking moved with the rod. Hi, thanks for the response. That is not a bad idea but Im not going to do that. I dont want to move around parts that are seemingly fitting and working and there is...

Re: Is it the connecting rod or the crank?
66 vairguy - I mistakenly asked you in a response to my initial post, about a 4dr V8 conversion car I thought you had. That post was meant for someone else. My apologies for sending it to you. Thanks again for your input. - Bill

Re: Is it the connecting rod or the crank?
cnicol: thank you for the crankshaft facts! Appreciate your response. As mentioned, this is a 65 4dr Monza. I see you own a 66 4dr V8? Can you share some pics of this car with me, including how the engine is installed in car? Is it a small block V8 that sits partially in the backseat? Or is the moto...
