Re: Removing transmission mounts on a 64

Thanks Brad, Yes I plan to replace both with new ones from Clarks, and I ordered them yesterday. I hadn’t seen that earlier post from terribleted. It looks like my plan to cut a hole for access to the top of the forward side transmission mount has precedence and is the way to go. Thanks again.

Removing transmission mounts on a 64

I just bolted up my ’64 engine in my early Corvair. I noticed that the forward transmission mount on the driver side appears to be bad. :banghead: So,,, it looks like I will be replacing both mounts. (These are the pair of transmission mounts that attach to the bracket behind the transmission that h...

Re: 63 Spyder question...

I have both a 63, (with a 4 carb 140 hp motor), and a 64 Spyder, that I run in Arizona. My 63 still has all shrouds attached. However when I last built the Spyder, I left the bottom boxes off. When I installed the metal pieces, I omitted the shrouds that have the thermostats that control the louvers...

Re: Injection System ?

I am also considering to add a water/methonol injection system and I am interested the comments from this post. I will be running a larger 184 CI engine with a Weber, wastegate, and an Otto-20 Cam. I really appreciate Nate showing how he did his. I am hoping that more people who have actually instal...

Re: Re-boring turbo barrels question

Thanks 66vairguy, Appreciate the response. That makes sense and probably where I will be taking this project. Instead of paying to get these rebored the money may be better spent in new barrels.

Re-boring turbo barrels question

I have a question I need some advice on. I am working on building a ’65 Turbo motor, with the stock late thicker barrels. In looking at the set of barrels I am working with, 3 are near standard, and 3 are around .030 over. (these did not come out of the same engine) A couple of the .030 over barrels...

Re: Corvair knockoffs

Thanks Brad, It looks like from the picture the adapters would work with either 4 bolt or 5 bolt wheels. Since the years offered were 62 through 64 I would believe most (maybe all) would be 13" wheels, but do you know if a 14" was offered also through Chevrolet ? I thought a 14"' was ...

Corvair knockoffs

Could someone from the forum help me with a question I have on Chevrolet offered knockoffs. I understood that knockoff wire wheels were an expensive option offered Chevrolet for several years. What years were they offered and did they come in 13 and 14 sizes ?

Re: Loose rear drive axle spines

Talked to a machinist, and pinning the end and using a round key would be very difficult because of the different hardness of the two materials you would need to drill through. The end mill would have a tendency to walk. In looking at the part, he felt pinning the neck (my second suggestion above) w...

Re: Loose rear drive axle spines

The bolt I am using is the correct length (with the proper thick washer), and when torqued on you can’t feel any movement with my hand. However with the pressures this must see in an operating car, I would think, there would still be movement on the spines. I my looking around for a good set with a ...

Loose rear drive axle spines

I have ’64 Spyder and the rear U-Joint yoke that bolts on the end of the axle is loose on the spines. I am using the thick washer and bolt that holds the yoke to the axle (and have it tortured), but still do not like the fact that the spines are loose. I have been looking around for used axles and y...

Re: Rear engine oil leak

Thanks guys, appreciate the constructive comments. I hope I don't need to pull the rear housing. If I did, it sounds like since I would have to go through and disconnect everything anyway, as you stated terribleted, to go the extra step to pull it would not be a big deal. Plus with it out, level, an...

Rear engine oil leak

A question for the experts on the forum. I have a fresh engine rebuild on a ’64 Spyder. I am starting to break the engine in and so far everything appears OK, aside from a small oil leak that appears to be coming from the rear engine plate. That is the rear housing that has the generator bracket, di...

Re: Muffler exhaust questions

I have had the same problem on my '64 Spyder. One method I have used to discover leaks is to spray paint the joints with white paint. I used VHT white ceramic header paint. After a short ride, leaks will show up as a dark stain on the white pipes. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4743/27829059019_e983...
