Re: Opinions on 1962 Spyder was: Shades Classic

If you want a Turbo EM go with a 63, or even better, a 64 (bigger engine, revised rear suspension). Typical of GM the Turbo cars were revised and refined every year. BTW - Steve Goodman at Rear Engine Specialists in Colorado http://www.rearenginespecialists.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href ...

Re: Considering purchasing a 62 Corvair

Just remember this, whatever you buy for 3 to 4 thousand is going to cost you a bundle before you get it restored to what that 66 looks like. You are better off saving your money for a good car that's done. :my02: You're right but I can't afford all of it right now, it's a lot easier for me to do ...

Re: Opinions on 1962 Spyder was: Shades Classic

Thanks for the input. I thought it might take premium, a lot of turbo cars do. From what I've read somewhere, the Corvair turbo engine had some upgrades to handle the strain from the turbo? Here are some examples: Because of the heat generated by the system, super-strength materials were specified ...

Re: Opinions on 1962 Spyder was: Shades Classic

And also, any thoughts on actually driving a turbo Spyder would be welcomed. Turbos on gas engines can be sort of peaky, the turbo on my Cummins truck and VW TDI's I've owned have been really solid but we're talking a diesel with a high torque at low RPM's.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Re: Shades Classic cars in Hastings Nebraska

I heard back from Chris via email with some nice photos of the engine compartment. The car is not the original color in or out but I like the original color and can fix that. I would appreciate some comments on photos of the engine compartment. I don't know what a Spyder is supposed to look like, I ...

Re: Shades Classic cars in Hastings Nebraska

Thanks Brad. I've just been burned enough after paying for shipping cars from places like California back to Ohio that I'm really apprehensive about buying sight unseen. I could tell from 20' away looking at the car on the transport trailer after the trip from California that I got screwed and that ...

Opinions on 1962 Spyder was: Shades Classic

Has anyone ever purchased a car there? Know anyone who has? They seem to be big on Corvairs so I was hoping someone on here had some experience with them. I'm not much on sight unseen purchases so I would like to know about any transactions people have had. Please send me a PM if that is more ...

Re: Considering purchasing a 62 Corvair

Sounds like a good choice to pass on this one. As someone who bought a nice "driver" that turned out to be a rust bucket I've been there/done that (see restoration thread). You will have to be a lot more careful with an LM car, they are much more prone to rust and were built with much thinner gauge ...

Re: Considering purchasing a 62 Corvair

Okay, I find that paint 936 is Ermine White so I was right and it was white at one point and someone did a really thorough repaint at some point. -2 after the 936 means blue interior paint? I need to find a color chip blue, I definitely saw runs in the interior door paint and it was much lighter ...

Re: Considering purchasing a 62 Corvair

**NOTE - this is a 2 part post, so if it seems weird, that is why. One part was written last night but had to be postponed because my wife spilled a beer in the cable modem. By the time we finished with the hair dryer and revived it, I realized I had forgotten the camera upload cable and college ...

Re: Considering purchasing a 62 Corvair

Good morning Brad, Thanks for the detailed reply. I spent some time yesterday browsing other posts in the forum and found some of your other responses in other threads as well. With regards to aluminum engines and crossthreading, I currently have (and am selling) a 67 VW beetle and 72 VW bus, both ...

Re: Considering purchasing a 62 Corvair

It's over 50 years old and a non-galvanized body so rust can really be anywhere. Back of the wheel wells, the rocker seam below the back edge of the doors, yes battery box, trunk floor, driver/passenger floors, front suspension crossmembers are common areas. Worth taking a magnet for the poor-mans ...
