Re: Electric Fuel Pump & OP Safety Installation

The RPM sensing switch is an alternative to the oil pressure switch; with either one an inertia switch would still be a wise suggestion. The switch is likely a Bosch fuel pump relay as seen in VWs and Porsches. Wired like a normal relay but with an extra terminal to plug a tach signal into.

Re: 65 4-door "sports car" project

Had something interesting happen last week. The car started idling rough and popping when revved, even in neutral. I popped the distributor cap to check the points and the rotor was wobbly, I thought maybe I knocked it off when pulling the cap? But looking closely there is a groove inside the rotor ...

Re: 64 Corvair caught on fire bigtime! What do I do now?

Short of prepping and painting it correctly you won't really stop the rust. You might hold it off for a while, but it'll come back. How long are you thinking? If you're eventually going to replace it since it is warped then strip it with aircraft stripper, etch-prime, and Rustoleum it. One of their ...

Re: 65 4-door "sports car" project

Hi, thanks. The bumpers were prepped the normal way: 80 grit, do bodywork, prime, and shoot. The handles were simply scuffed and primed. I thought the paint would quickly wear around the button but so far it's holding up. These handles are used in many Chevy cars so I wasn't afraid of experimenting....

Re: 65 4-door "sports car" project

I cut 1.5 coils out the rear. Easy job, took about an hour per side. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A18lUL45Pc4/TofV_F4THYI/AAAAAAAAC44/gB-Qwl3xZ8o/s800/IMAG0587.jpg Sunday I installed the front lid weatherstrip (engine lid last week) and today it's pouring rain that's supposed to continue most ...

The tint is photoshopped in. I like it.

Re: 65 4-door "sports car" project

No sure, Greg. I should've asked the glass guy while he was there putting the chrome trim back on. The front window is new but I was curious about the rear's availability, too. Just in case.

Re: 65 4-door "sports car" project

Shortly after my last update I painted in a hurry and messed it up. Then I started a new full-time job and you know how that goes. After a botched job that I sanded down for an impromptu satin look that actually wasn't so bad, here's where I am a year later. If you can't do it right don't do it at a...

Re: Thinking about trading for my 1st Corvair

What's the history on the Corvair engine? I would never buy a Corvair that didn't have at least the heads rebuilt by a competent Corvair mechanic first. A previously overheated 390 in your Thunderbird wouldn't even skip a beat and would likely outlast the car if cared for. An overheated Corvair engi...

Re: Paint ideas

The classic two tone using basic colors is forever cool. Two tone has been around for a while but the colors and where they are separated have always changed. The hard line separation like the examples above are very recent trends. Go to a car show in the last few years and it's always the same sea...

Re: Paint ideas

I had the same scheme planned for my Mustang but decided it was too trendy. You know how dated 70s metalflake, 80s rainbow stripes, and 90s pastel-painted bumpers look? That'll look just as dated in a few years, I think it already does actually. It's your car so it's all about what you like but it's...

Re: Starter sometimes doesn't crank

Is it actually spinning on its own without turning the engine over? Or is it clicking with no action? Spinning generally means the solenoid is good. If it's just clicking then it's a solenoid/wiring issue. If the starter actually spins then you might have some mechanical issues and need to bench-tes...

Re: 65 4-door "sports car" project

The lip on the EM helps you figure out which way the car is pointing! I actually like that feature, makes the car more "swoopy" than just another 4-door box. So here's where I am today. Missed a small dent on the hood so out came the hammer and filler again, which I thought I was done with...

Re: My build 1965 Coupe 140/4spd

That's right, your winters there are warmer than our summers! I have a friend in Riverside and she complains about being "cold" when it's under 80, or tells me it's 98 there and in the meantime it's drizzling here.

Re: My build 1965 Coupe 140/4spd

Hey Scott didn't you just break every CA tint law? I take it either they don't hassle you for it where you live, or you're about to be hassled for it. I saw a $99 tint job "lifetime warranty" ad in the local Pennysaver. I'm thinking the fly-by-night company will be long gone before the lif...
