I don't see how this story is possible. William Randolph Hearst died 10 years before this van was built.

Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator
I don't know how much VOLUME a gas heater needs, but I do know that it needs 4.5 to 5 pounds of fuel PRESSURE to work correctly. A stock fuel pump in good condition will provide more than adequate pressure. (That's why the heaters worked when the cars were new.) If the fuel pump is working adequatel...

Clockwise increases pressure, counterclockwise reduces it.

Re: Back to the gas heater...
The fuel solenoid quit on my FC gas heater. I was going to replace the solenoid until I noticed a burned/corroded spot on the inside of the solenoid cover. I sanded the bad spot until it was shiny and reinstalled it. The heater fired up on the first try. Fortunately the solenoid cover is one of the ...

Re: Question: Temp gauge accuracy and proof..
Have you done the normal things to reduce/accommodate engine temps like deflashing the cylinder head fins, removing lower shrouds, and using synthetic oil? Some swear by a deeper oil pan also.

Re: Volkswagen cooling theory?
Unless the car has a mechanical problem it's not necessary to rev the engine at low speeds. That's why Corvairs make good parade cars -- they don't overheat in town.

Re: 1966 500 with NO OPTIONS!
My dad won a new 1966 Corvair in a church raffle. It was a Sandalwood Tan 500 coupe with no options. He wouldn't trade it and our '60 Impala for the Aztec Bronze Chevelle SS396 I wanted that the dealer had on his showroom floor!

Re: Late distributor early engine
Set the timing to the new distributor specs, not the original specs. The Corvair Tech Guide has the specs for most all Corvair distributors. If memory serves, the number you listed is for a 140 h.p. distributor.

On the FC's the fuel supply and overflow lines run VERY close to the exhaust pipe. The corporate lawyers would have a stroke if anything like that was attempted today!

Chevy never did, but you could buy a turn-key Yenko Stinger (raceable street car) or a Fitch Sprint (touring/GT car) from aftermarket firms.

Re: Vert hard top?
There was a company (can't recall the name) that made a fiberglass top for the early convertibles. I've seen 2 of them over the years. I think they would be more of a nuisance than they are worth, but some people seem to like them. If the latches aren't there and in working order the top is pretty m...

Re: Gunked up oil
If you find a thick gray residue in the bottom of the pan it's probably lead from the gasoline of 50 years ago. it's normal, but wear gloves when removing it.

You can buy an adapter from Clark's to mount a temp sender in the left cylinder head. The tach works fine with a Pertronix.
