Re: Motor install

It is not that bad. Car a couple feet in the air at the rear of the car (below the rear bumper) is not very high. I only jack just high enough to clear the top of the engine going back in.

Re: Rod knock?

Certainly valve train noise, like a rocker tapping from a weak, maladjusted, or not fully pumped lifter (could other uglier things as well of course like sticking valve dropped seat, bent valve, etc.). How long did you let it idle (sometimes a weak lifter may take a good bit to pump up properly...I ...

Re: Just a few issues

Get in the Corvair shop manual and follow the distributor installation engine disturbed instructions in the engine electrical section and re-install the distributor correctly. Hopefully this fixes your no start. The broken generator mounting part (I am assuming generator end frame from what you have...

You may want to post a photo of the area so someone with a car to cut up can see what you need.

Re: Alternator issues

Only just do not run it for a long time. Without the engine fan the engine will eventually overheat, but, it would likely take over 15 mins for it to get really hot even in hot weather.

Re: This one strikes me as odd for several reasons.

Perhaps a European or someone who has English as a second language. The "inhibitor" could be a naming error or the mechanic told them that as he ripped them off?

Re: What Do I need for repair and maintenance

If you want to maintain your Corvair the way many have been maintained you need mostly some duct tape, rubber bands, zip ties, rubber fuel hose, an assortment of screw thread and metric bolts (metric bolts work better in SAE holes ya know), and a good supply of oil to replace that which keeps coming...

Terribleted Don't discourage the guy! It is almost Christmas and he needs an excuse to buy himself a lift as a gift to himself. Lol Ed Stevenson LOL no discouragement. If he really wants a lift stay with the 3 or more feet argument:) It is actually easier to install the lower shroud with thermostat...

Re: Alternator issues

You can either get a functional generator or rebuild the one you have or purchase a rebuilt generator (unlikely junk yard find unless your junk yards have lots of cars before the mid 60's and even if they do a usable part might be hard to find). You can convert to a later alternator system using use...

LOL I used to have a phone book listing for my business. The listing was Corvair Repair. Periodically a radiator shop would call Corvair Repair to try to sell me radiators for Corvairs:)

Re: Alternator issues

That is a generator, not an alternator. It should turn easily by hand (with no belt on it) if it is hard to turn it is damaged or binding against something. The generator cooling fan appears to be the incorrect part. The Corvair part has opposite direction vanes on it. Troubleshooting, repair, and r...

Looks to me like an aftermarket emergency 4-way flasher. Is there a flasher can in the circuit?

I think so also. I bet what you are holding is the contact plate of the switch.
