Re: Molded Hood Insulation
I'm glad Clark's sent out a better pad - BUT you'd think after the first issue they'd make sure they sent a pad without a "chunk" missing!!! Over the years Clark's has replaced a few items for me without issue, but in the last two years I've had two instances where they sent a replacement...

Re: Molded Hood Insulation
The second panel (replacement) looks almost perfect. I really like the 'mottled' shades of gray. It has a few small wrinkles that are barely noticeable. It's missing a small chunk of fiberglass near the top left corner (see photo). I may be able to patch it using a piece of fiberglass cut from the f...

Re: Molded Hood Insulation
I contacted Clark's. They said the molded insulation does have some wrinkles, but the one I received is more wrinkled than usual. They will send a replacement. They also said the wrinkles sometimes come out with time. I've been 95% happy with the things I've purchased from Clark's, so I really can't...

Molded Hood Insulation
I just bought repro molded hood insulation from Clark's. It has quite a few wrinkles where it was pressed down/molded. Did the original hood insulation have wrinkles?

Re: How to drain 4-speed transmission?
Sorry but my suggestion would be to find a bottle of the manual transmission and transaxle lube at a parts store and read the label. Since obviously the representative you spoke to at Amsoil can't. Yes, I would read the label but I can't find AMSOIL, locally. I can get Sta-Lube multi-purpose hypoid...

Re: Replacing thermostat bellows
I bought replacements from Clark's. As I recall, I had to drop one side of the lower shrouds to install. Three feet off the ground would be nice, but you can do it with less. FYI: Corvair Lift Points http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/file.php?1,file=109216,filename=CorvairLift-EM.jpg http://corvaircen...

Re: Motor install
It's been a long time since I installed my Corvair's engine. Installation involved using a homemade engine cart/cradle, a floor jack and chains bolted from engine to the frame to keep it stable. The chains helped to adjust the angle one chain-link at a time, as needed. I should have taken pictures. ...

Re: 66 corvair electric top motor
Clark's should carry that part. Are you sure you need a new motor? You could have a relay or switch problem.

Re: How to drain 4-speed transmission?
There is a lot of contradictory information on the Internet about which gear oil to use for older cars. I've contacted AMSOIL about using their GL-4 Transmission & Transaxle gear lube for hypoid gears. They told me for hypoid gears I need to use their GL-5 Severe Gear 75W-90 lube. It's hard to b...

How to drain 4-speed transmission?
I've drained the differential and refilled, but the transmission is a problem. I'm using a suction gun with a 1/2" ID tube. In the tight space, I can't get in a position to have the tube to go into the trans on an angle. It just goes in straight and sucks air, no gear oil. I'm going to try agai...

Re: Are the original exhaust manifold gaskets made of asbestos?
I just removed mine a few days ago and my first thought was asbestos. I wasn't sure so I treated it as such. I soaked it with water to keep from making dust. Be safe. Thanks!! I used your idea and wet them down. Two gaskets came off intact. Two came off almost intact. And, two broke into pieces. Ke...

Are the original exhaust manifold gaskets made of asbestos?
I've dropped one of the exhaust manifolds and the old gaskets are white. I'm assuming they're made of asbestos. Is this correct?

Re: Removing lower shrouds for headers?
Brad, Thanks much for the very informative answer. I live where the winters are mild. My Corvair is garaged year round and I never drive it in the rain, snow, or on wet roads. It's strictly a 'Sunday' driver. So, I don't think I should have an issue except for longer warm up times. Also, I drive the...

Removing lower shrouds for headers?
I have a set of headers that requires cutting (or removing) the lower shrouds. Will running the car without lower shrouds have any ill effects, such as running hot?
