Re: Timing question
1) Have you checked the spark plug wires to verify that they are not leaking the spark to ground? Yes. 2) Does the car run fine at slow speeds, and break up under acceleration? It seems to run fine when on the idle circuit, but when I give it much gas is when it seems to fall flat. 3) What brand spa...

Re: Timing question
Brad, I've definitely got an engine that didn't come with the car. Engine code is RA, which denotes a 65-67 95hp. Distributor code is 110310, which matches the engine. I'm pretty certain at this point that my problem is in the fuel system. Points, condenser, cap, rotor, plugs and wires are all new, ...

Re: Timing question
More detective work, Distributor number is1110310, which comes back as 64-67, manual trans. I'm about ready to start looking at my fuel system as the problem.

Re: Timing question
Ugh- one more fun thing I just found out. It would appear that my engine is not original, either. With a code of T0625RA, it appears to be a 65-67 95 hp engine. It has the cast balancer, so outer ring slip isn't a possible issue. And, with the RA code, that would eliminate incorrect distributor as a...

Re: Timing question
And, for information's sake- there is no question that the mechanical advance is working- with the vac advance unplugged, you can see the timing advance when revving the engine while using the timing light. And, the vac advance is brand new, and it can be seen operating when it is connected. But, th...

Re: Timing question
Junkman, you might have hit on the exact reason that my car runs like hammered crap, and nothing I have done makes it any better.

Timing question
OK, I'm dealing with a 1964 Monza, and my question is whether there is any difference in cams between engines mated to Powerglides and 4 speeds. timing spec is 6 degrees BTDC for a 4 speed car and 14 degrees BTDC for a PG My car is a 4 speed, but is originally a PG car. I'm wondering if the transmis...

Re: Runnability issue. Any ideas before I dive in semi-ignor
Brad, thanks! Just reading the post showed me a mistake I made in what I did- When I set the timing, I totally forgot to disconnect and plug the vacuum advance. Hey, it's been almost 20 years since I drove a car without an ECM. This gives me some good places to start, since what I'm feeling could ea...

Re: Runnability issue. Any ideas before I dive in semi-ignor
Addendum: Yes, there were still fuel filters in the carbs. I changed them, and it may have alleviated the problem slightly, but it is still there.

Runnability issue. Any ideas before I dive in semi-ignorant?
I finished up the pushrod tube seal change today, and actually took her out for her first drive since the day I bought it back in May. At the time I bought it, this problem was not there, but it did have a significant miss, coming from one of the drivers side cylinders. Before I describe the issue, ...

Re: Almost roadworthy, advice needed
Well, until I get it shaken down good, I'm going to stay pretty local. Maybe 30 minute trips or so. I'd like to drive it to work on nice days. Eventually, I need it to go farther, though. My Mother in law had a 66 convertible, and it was her favorite car of all time. Her health isn't so good these d...

That horse ws dead long ago. The friend who suggested to do this never let's go of what he sees as good humor and he also came of age in the 60s era. Got to admit I appreciate his jokes most of the time :) I like his sense of humor, but I have a "Nader for President 200*" bumper sticker o...

Almost roadworthy, advice needed
Okay, I quit the job that never gave me time to work on my project cars and took one that's more humane. The Corvair was priority, since the '51 is a few years out, realistically. So, I've been working on the Corvair, and it is close. I'll probably drive it just about any day the weather is nice. Si...
