Re: 1963 Corvair Engine detonation

Oh, I also re did the compression check. Took all the spark plugs out, held open throttle plate and choke, cranked 5-6 times and got 170 to 180psi. I think the more times I crank the higher and higher the pressure indicates. Or does it level off after a certain number of cranks? WOW......that is so...

Re: Backfiring when warmed up

What may be going on is that the engine only runs well with the chokes on. If mine, I'd rebuild the primary carbs at least and change the fuel filters, to start with.

Re: 1963 Corvair Engine detonation

If the carbs are way out of balance and the engine is struggling to pull a load on one side only with high timing yes it would detonate. The carbs need to be balanced before really final setting the timing, because you can not set a real curb idle to set the timing without the carbs being balanced....

Re: Cylinder #2 no compression

I'd say that if it is zero compression, that will most likely point to the valve hanging open......or a broken valve spring. Hopefully not a valve seat that dislodged and cocked in place, keeping it hung open.

A '68 has the big motor. I'd assume that the car needs so much that it may not be economically feasible. $500

Re: 65 monza 4 speed w shifter issue.

It sounds as though you are easily well-versed enough to dive into this shifter issue. I'd bet that there's more than a 50% chance of it being outside the trans.....shifter related, that is.

Re: 65 monza 4 speed w shifter issue.

I recently bought my 2nd corsa and the previous owner said it came with the short throw shifter kit. It would NOT go into reverse hardly at all, maybe after about 5 minutes of thrashing the shift lever around. So I took the lever out, removed the spacer/adapter (the kit) and since then......perfect!

Re: Interior Poll

Wow, through all the decades, I've never seen nor heard of a grey (slate) interior!! Now I kinda like it. I was thinking you were considering a funky gray velour deal...
