Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Yeah, I'm going to use epoxy temporarily until I get a new shaft. It's actually loose in rotation so either the shaft or the lever plate is worn. I'll know for sure which one when I take it apart tonight.

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

I've been tinkering with it more the last few days and found an issue that is at least somewhat contributing to this problem. The right side carburetor shaft is loose on the actuator so there is significant lag between the left and right carbs. Seems that while I did synchronize at idle, it is not s...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

I think we can rule out a lot of things by the simple fact that I've been driving it every day for the last 3-4 months up to and including the convention. The car ran fine one day then suddenly changed over the next day to having this issue. I do run 93 octane which is the highest I can get around h...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Whatever is wrong with the carburetor is something more than a simple issue. I already took them both apart completely and cleaned them out with carb cleaner including the passageways (as stated in the original post). I will pull the passenger side one off again and see if there is any issue with th...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Joe please explain how I ran this setup with no problems for a year with 10,000 miles? Again, it's not the jetting and the plugs only had a hundred miles on them when I found them black again. As Ted said, it's a carburetor issue, which I'm digging into currently. I've been driving and tinkering wit...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Alright, I did a compression test and here are the results. #1 cylinder is bottom right. 140 150 150 150 145 140 So, I'd say those are pretty good results especially considering the engine was cold. In pulling the plugs I found that the driver side ones were actually really good, just the passenger ...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Joe... I said the spark plugs are new already. I've been running this setup for over a year with this jet size with no problems. Why would it suddenly change? I'm running some tests tonight to make sure it's not a broken cam gear key. Was going to yesterday but as luck would have it I caught a flat ...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

No misfire at idle, only cruising speeds above 65 and when at full throttle above 2500 rpm. I drove it yesterday to work so I was able to get a better feel for exactly when the issue would occur. The power feels normal below 3000 rpm at anywhere below full throttle. As I said in the original post......

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Ted, good point, I didn't think about that. Definitely something for me to do after work tomorrow. This old Corvair has put up with a lot of driving in the four years I've had it and so far has been the most reliable of my vehicles so I can't complain too much. Hoping the compression test comes out ...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

It is a bit hard to start hot but it fires right up cold, been assuming it's just the starter going out. I'll start with re-gapping the plugs and swapping out the jets. If that doesn't help then I guess I'll be digging a bit deeper. Hoping it's not a sheared key as I don't have the funds to be rebui...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Ted, please see before where I said retarding the timing made it misfire more. Advancing more causes pinging, not misfiring. This is the same manner in which I set the timing normally, advance until it causes detonation then back it off. Marty, it has about 150k on it currently. I would think a prob...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Floats were fine when I pulled carbs apart, no sloshing inside. Pump doesn't show any signs of leakage and appears to be working normally. Not sure how bad compression on one or two cylinders could cause all the plugs to read rich but I guess I can check that when I have time. I have all the normal ...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

1. I've been through several tanks since it started, this crappy mileage isn't helping. 2. All replaced withing the last year or two, nothing noticeable when I checked everything. Choke pull off hoses came with the rebuilt carbs but I may replace them to be sure. 3. Seems to be getting too much fuel...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

The plug gap was from what some suggested was able to be ran with the HEI and high output coil. I've been running 54s for a year now so I doubt that is the issue. I do have 52s I could put in but that wouldn't account for a nearly 10mpg drop. I did the carb adjustments running as I've always done an...

Engine Troubles... Please Help

Please read this entirely! I have done a lot of troubleshooting and it will save a lot of repeat information. Alright everybody, I'm finally at my wits end and throwing in the towel on this one. My car has not been running right for a few weeks now and I've spent countless hours troubleshooting. It ...

Re: Headlights problem

My bad, guess my car was messed with at some point, they never came on together. The projectors I put in are separate high/low beam so it never became an issue. I'll have to look back through the wiring and see what was changed. Sorry about the confusion.
