The Toy is getting front disks

I got a hot rod disk brake package at a local swap meet. Looks like it was new, maybe installed but just got rusty and never on the road. What it is: Mustang II drop spindles and rotors, with GM "metric' calipers and brackets. All aftermarket, the calipers say Speedway. I was going to build it ...

Re: The Spousal Avoidance Unit build

Wow, that Impala is nice!
And your 'vair is coming along nicely.
I hadn't checked on this thread for a long time, glad you've stuck with it and getting close to the goal!

Re: Hello from SoCal

Still alive, getting out from time to time. Went to an autocross a while back. Determined that I don't have nearly enough throttle discipline. The track was cold and a bit wet anyway, and the car really did not want to go straight under power! Eh - maybe I provided some entertainment, as I was sidew...

Re: Hello from SoCal

Quick update - I got the newer 3800 and revised suspension 'running' just before the 2018 fbt. Had heating problems, didn't make it. Wound up swapping heads, thrashing around, and have it running pretty well. Dumb thing still makes unhappy bubbling/boiling noises after shutoff, but actual running te...

Re: improved braking - anyone drill their brake drums?

The article claims " If you've driven a drum brake equipped car through water you know braking is non-existent. With holes in the drums, centrifugal force not only evacuates dust, but water immediately as well. But the main benefit is the fact that when drums are vented properly, so as to elimi...

Re: Quick Steering Arms - Fitment - OPGI

"not needed except for competition" - well... When I first got my "Corvair" on the road, I thought the steering was godawful slow. So I put some Tempest steering arms on, that quickened it a lot. (I was scrapping a '61 Tempest at the time) It does require more muscle, especially ...

improved braking - anyone drill their brake drums?

I read that a reasonable way to reduce fade in hard usage is to drill holes in the drum - article

Re: LM axle u-joint ---- what is the max angles

oops - haven't been here much, and obviously haven't checked notifications!
YEah, I started my 3.8 swap in '04 and got it on the road in late 09.
I bought the series II motor in 2012 or so, and almost ready to install in 2018...

Re: LM axle u-joint ---- what is the max angles

The other 3.8 swaps are transverse setups, and I see the '85 is a longitudinal setup like the earlier Rivieras.
That will affect things a bit.
Is the project still alive?

Re: Random Guy Poll

typical question:
* what the *&#% is THAT?

(from ordinary car guys)

best question:
* hey, man - is that a modified Corvair?
from random rasta-looking guy in South LA.

Re: I get a lot of looks

I get lots of looks, but most are along the lines of "what is that?" I tell them it started life as a Corvair. It's fun driving on the freeway and seeing someone's window filled with a phone or tablet taking pictures. (stay away, please!) Over the five years on the road, only a few have ac...
