Re: Supposed fresh engine

Have you verified you have oil pressure? Make sure the oil pressure relief valve and spring are in place before you start cranking again. I missed that in my first overhaul ( trusting in a replacement rear engine casting ..the one that holds the distributor..) and it was missing. The engine had only...

Re: Air Injection

Interesting post here. Back when I was daily driving Corvairs in the mid-70's, I saw a couple of 1966 / later cars with the air injection reactor pumps, gulp valves and all the rest of that equipment. The pump was driven off a pulley that was piggybacked onto the harmonic balancer and if I recall co...

Re: Is this Color Combo rare for a 62 Convertible?

Here's a fine example of a gold interior EM convertible seen at a Watsonville, Ca car show last year, The current owner says both colors are factory original and authentic.

Re: Corvair by IECO (1977 catalog)

Brings back memories for me too. I had the IECO 2-bbl for my 110HP '65 Monza coupe in the Bay Area back in '75 to '77. (anybody remember a Panther Pink coupe with Camaro rear lights? yeah, that was me.. I used a Rochester 2BBL off a small GM V-8 as the carb, tended to run pretty rich around town, de...

Re: Carbs and mystrery box ?

Wattsavair,
Here's what those Buick rims looked like some 35 years ago on my '65 Monza convertible.

Wish I still had it!!

I used the center caps for a 1973 Chevy Vega, and they snapped right in.
Not sure if they are still available, but that's the easiest way to go.

Re: Steering column screws

Seems I recall when I was restoring my Rampside > 30 yrs ago, I needed the same type tool. I needed to swap out the rear lower cab panel, the one that has the big depression stamped in it for the spare tire. The original was completely beat up, and I saved a ton of work swapping one from another Ram...

Re: First Post: New to me Corvair -Should I ship it or drive

One word of caution; BRAKES Has the previous owner had the brakes flushed in the last 2 years? You're dealing with a 1/2 century old car here, and if you're not sure of the condition of the hydraulic system you may be in for a surprise. Brake fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere, and said water p...

Re: 1961 Corvair Lakewood 700

Brad and OP, tx for the welcome! interesting question, why I’m interested in Corvairs again! Actually I never stopped being interested in the car..After 30 years of hindsight, I probably forgot most of the hard times during my misadventures with the car...so what’s left are good memories. With the r...

Re: 1961 Corvair Lakewood 700

+1 on the advice about the Judson supercharger. I've been away from 'Vairs for over 31 years, but I did have several in the previous 15 years and did try a Judson on my '65 Monza convertible. Air-cooled engines are really sensitive to detonation, and that's what happened with mine..you are effective...
