Re: Rochester carbs really getting under my skin...

I heard a guy in my club say if you rebuild a carb, run the engine, and let it sit for three months, you will need to tear the carb down and rebuild again. The problem is the gas we get these days, particularly the alcohol gas. For mine, I use gas with no alcohol, very expensive, but seems to help. ...

Re: how to stand out like a sore thumb

SWEET!!!!! Of course it does point out how much larger cars have gotten over the years. I mean really, look at the size of that Civic! I had a '76 model once, it was a fun little car, just not rebuildable. But I can honestly say this: looking at this collection of "cool" cars, I know which...

Re: Oil coming out my dipstick tube - its a mess!

I remember a tale of long ago when someone started an engine with a blocked PCV system with the hood up. He looked back and saw the dipstick fy across the yard!

Sometimes I find scorpions in my house. Sometimes they are alive, sometimes they look chewed up. Found out my cat was killing them for me. Who knew?

Re: Hello all you 'vair fans

Welcome! I've done all the tops on my '64 since I bought the car in 1974. It can be done, but is a pain. Just have to be very careful, and follow all the directions in the '64 manual, it has an excellent section on tops. The most aggravating part to me was climbing in and out of the back seat to ins...

Re: Hesitation

I sedond checking the vacuuum advance before tearing into anything else. Check the hose, make sure it has no leaks, and also check that the advance is working. Easy to do, and even easier to overlook. Also check for vacuum leaks at the crossover tube. Carbs could stand a rebuild maybe, but in my exp...

Re: Engine removal. HELP!!!

Back when I was in practice, I could pull the car in the basement, and have the drive train sitting on the ground in half an hour. That included time to put the car on the jack stands. Start by pulling the rear wheels. Then look at the hub, and the hole in it. That hole will line up with four nuts t...

Re: Fuel Pumps..

Did you read my story in the Communique, "Mr. Coffee's Engine?" It details how I ruined my 140 with multiple fuel pumps that each over pressurized the fuel. I believe there was a rash of these made around 10-15 years ago, the story I got was an improper internal regulator spring that did n...

Re: Replacing pushrod seals

I can believe that it hadn't had much of a service for the last 50 years, going by the sludge in the oil pan when I took it off. Never seen it like that ever before, how the thing was ever running I'll never know, it was like thick grey stinking ice cream. Now that's something I haven't seen in a l...

Re: What is this part?

Backup switch it is. The one on my Spyder looked worse when I got the car in '74. All these years later, it hasn't healed itself. So, pretty safe to ignore it, unless you like having backup lights.

Re: In way over my head... Carb rebuild.

A little more info might help. What year/model do you have? Does the car run at all at this point? And do you have a shop manual? If you have the right manual, the instructions are pretty specific on how to set everything up. They always need a bit of adjusting to get everything just right, but the ...

Re: wheres this part go?

I believe it bolts to the top shroud, right behind (forward of) the fan. I think the throttle return spring hooks on that little cutout near the 2-hole end. That's it! The two holes are for screws to attach it to the bottom of the air cleaner, and the notch is for the accelerator spring. But just d...
