Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

Sorry for the dark pictures, but I stopped by the machine shop today, picked up my parts, and another package came in!! Rest of the stuff comes in around Monday, won't be home from a trip North until Tuesday, assembly starts then! First engine rebuild, any tips besides the lifter/camshaft break in? ...

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

Well, first package came in today. I got a gasket set for my motor and new lifters, as well as some new head nuts and a replacement wiring harness! Thanks to Rafee for some good prices and pretty looking parts! In other news, is it okay to use a cork pan gasket with an aluminum pan? Also, just out o...

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

Edit again: Cam choices are hard. Just need to pick one and be happy!! In other news, does anyone have a need for a 280, or should I save it along with my 140 block for a rebuild on that :rolling:

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

So what I'm looking for is a 304 cam and a new gear, wish me luck. If I can't find anything soon, I'll just get an Tb-10 or a 260, I'd like to be driving soon, as I need a car! Thanks for all the help

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

Thank you for the article. That summed it up nicely. Also thank you notched for your wisdom!!! Since I am using a stock cam as of now, is it okay to reuse the cam gear? Parts coming Wednesday Thursday can't wait!! Edit: after inspecting my stock cam, three of the lobes have little dimples on them. S...

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

Also to my understanding, the Otto tb20 has the same duration as the 280?

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

Thanks guys, so my two options here are just toss in the stock cam, or if it's not in good shape, replace. If I replaced should I go stock again, or a TB-20, 260?

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

How will this camshaft make the turbo suffer? I'm curious. I'll have to check my old camshaft to see, but I assumed this one would be a bit better?

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

It was to my understanding that the extra duration helps with boost and CR and lift was what killed turbo motors, I could easily be wrong though.

Re: Turbo Engine Rebuild

That's what I thought at first. But clarks cams are a .465 lift, not a .420, I am just hoping it will be okay, I'm on a very tight budget. I got the cam from a friend who bought a turbo motor with a dropped seat during break in.

Re: Hi, Corvair enthusiasts!

Hey, great story! I am not myself interested in the engine, but I couldn't help but notice that the user wqqqdster is looking for a 140 hp engine. He states rebuildable, but you never know! Here is the link to his thread: http://www.corvairforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=9804" onclick=...

Turbo Engine Rebuild

Hey, So I got my Corvair running, and drove her around for a little. However, after trying to accept the fact that I burned an insane amount of oil, I decided to rebuild. I was blowing clouds of smoke out of the tailpipe, and the PCV tube was blowing not sucking(what does this mean?), and lots of sm...

Re: New Corvair owner

Love the luggage rack - I know they had them, just not how and if they changed between years. Rather than posting just a compliment, I looked into bench seats. Apparently in 1965, Only the 500 came with a bench seat option - Corsas and Monzas had standard bucket seats. I don't think bench seats came...

Re: Carter YH?

When I turn the car over, I get nothing, but if I prime the carb with a. Few pumps, the car turns over then stops, like ignition at the way wrong time, but no backfire.

Re: Carter YH?

I cracked open the carb didn't see anything. The gallery between the turbo and carb is new and I see nothing wrong with it. After timing the engine, it now won't start at all?? I must have done something wrong. I'm going to redo it. Any other possibilities? Could there be a leak? Where? I've been to...
