Re: 1960 gas heater install in a 63

Interesting question about the source of fresh air. Here's what's in the '60 service manual description: (emphasis added) "Outside air is drawn through the cowl vent and into the heater through an opening in the right of the fender wheelhouse area and forced into the car interior through the bl...

Re: 1960 gas heater install in a 63

I don't have a photo of my (long gone) '60 Monza trunk, but I do have this from a manual:

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

So... since your car has a '60 BR differential and a 63 transmission, someone has definitely altered one or the other because they definitely won't work together. A 60 3-sp differential is set up to accept a 3-sp transmission with a short output shaft like this: (see stub shaft at right) 60 3-sp tra...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

Regarding "axle length", Rex was referring to the little stub-axles that go into the differential. '60s had two identical "short" stub axles, while open-differentials in 61-64 cars had stub axles of different lengths. Totally inaccurate numbers, but just to give you an idea, &quo...

Re: Manual to Automatic

Converting your PG Corvair 95 to manual transmission is a much bigger and more expensive job than converting your MT engine to PG spec. How much bigger job; maybe 25x bigger job and 10x more expensive. Highly suggest you convert your engine to PG (Flexplate, short bolts, bell housing, balance tube, ...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

The engines were built ahead of time in Tonowanda, NY and shipped complete to the various final assembly plants. They were built to a specific final configuration and stamped as such at Tonowanda. From Tonowanda (That's the "T" in you engine ID code), they were shipped in crates to the var...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

More fun: BR is the differential code for a '60 95hp 3sp! How's that going to fit a later 3-sp with it's completely different output shaft? Is it possible your diff is a BP? DSCF7102 MU.jpg Let's say you're GM and you have built some YD motors but the 4-sp option is delayed until the next model year...

Re: CORVAIR COMBINED WIRING SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS

Sounds like a plan. Note: A "Short" is two wired connected together or a wire connecting to ground. A Short usually blows a fuse and takes out everything on the circuit. An "Open" is a broken wire or bad connection. An "Open" causes something to stop working but does no...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

Craig's comments in blue Not a problem, just for sanity sake I want to make sure. Also a bit a go I looked on California Corvair for the same thing you have and noticed the crossmembers were for 61 and beyond. How are the Crossmembers different then the 60? Why isn't the listing from 60-64? Almost ...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

Also that Stock 4SP cutout picture doesn't match anything I have seen in my research looks to be a blown-up picture from here: https://corvaircenter.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=176029 which if I understand correctly is modified and still needs some work for strength. I would have reinforced it a bit ...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

Thanks, Jeremiah. A couple of related factoids... -Corvairs were originally supposed to be "automatic only". The adaptation to a manual trans (Chevrolet's non-syncromesh 1st, 3-speed) was something of a "crash program" already. That's why our flywheel is so weird. - The Corvair 4...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe

Jeremiah, would you mind posting a picture of the center section of the rear suspension cross member where the transmission support bolts on? This area should be exposed since the transmission is out.
I am interested to see what GNM did to accommodate the longer 44-speed transmission.

Re: Main Harness Connector body Terminal removal engine side

The release tool goes in from the terminal side and release allows the terminal and wire to come out on the wire side. The idea is to push-in the little wings sticking out on each side of the terminal. With the wings pushed in, the terminal & wire will slide out the wire-side of the connector.

Re: Corvair Packard 56 Connectors Electrical Wiring Repair Info

Nice summary and instructions, Al.
My only comment is that Packard Series 56 (and the wider Series 59 in the headlights) have no relation to Packard "Twin-Lock" series except they were both designed and made by Delco-Packard.

Re: Main Harness Connector body Terminal removal engine side

Those are Packard "Twin-Lock" terminals, and yes, the same terminal on both sides of the connector so they're unisex. As the name implies, there are two locking tabs and they're on opposite sides. The release tool consists of two parallel blades that simultaneously release both tabs. For a...
