I've seen this before. The ones I've fixed were caused by poor contact at the points-plate grounding spring. Vacuum advance only occurs at cruise and when it advances, the points plate moves and the grounding spring loses contact between its moving and fixed element.

I did 50 years ago, does that count? Technically mine was based on a Corvair 95 Deluxe Corvan, not a GB. Starting with a panel allowed factory installation of screened, louvered windows along with a full interior kit.

64 engine harness. You may have to modify for an alternator or Clarks/M&H may offer a 64 harness already modified.
Obviously you need to find the cause of the high current or short.
Exactly what do you have for electronic ignition and coil? Any wiring modifications?

If you want to get "all fancy" and measure the actual drain, be aware that this test is the absolute fastest way to fry an ammeter. Required time to fry is under 0.1 seconds; maybe closer to 0.01 seconds. The best way is to obtain a 1-ohm resistor (10 or 20 watt rating), put some clips on ...

12.8 volts running could be a lot of things but one thing it isn't is "right". Bad alternator or bad regulator or bad battery. Pick one, pick two, or pick three. You're going to need a proper diagnostic, including parasitic drain while not running, to figure out the culprit)(s).

What equipment is in your car that makes it need a higher output alternator? Why would the alternator ruin your battery; that's more of a regulator or wiring issue. If you go with an internally regulated alternator, make sure you get the 3-wire, not the 1-wire version so you retain your GEN/FAN warn...
